Chalet de Laval - Alpe du Lauzet

A traverse of the Cerces massif via one of its highest passes (Béraudes) and some very beautiful lakes.
And a chance to see much of the previous day’s descent route, as well as the many lakes on the other side.
In early summer, the route can be made difficult by the presence of snow in the Lac des Béraudes cirque or a snow cornice on the Col des Béraudes (speaking from experience).

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: Valfréjus - Alpe du Lauzet

Description of the walk

(S) Leave the Laval chalets to reach the Laval car park and then the Pont du Moutet.

(1) Cross the Clarée and follow a marked path that climbs relatively gently west/north-west then west to the foot of the Lac des Béraudes pass.
A series of short switchbacks then leads to the lake.

(2) After the lake, the path climbs up the right bank through scree to go round the lake, and ascends more or less comfortably to the pass.
The final section is very steep and requires some care to reach the Col des Béraudes.

(3) Descend towards Guisane to reach a crossroads of paths in a small cirque.

(4) Turn right and follow an almost flat path to reach Lac des Crouserocs.

(5) Continue on to reach the Col de la Ponsonnière.

(6) Turn left almost 180° onto theGR®®57, marked in white and red, and continue the descent, skirting Lac de la Ponsonnière. Further on, reach the crossroads by the shepherd’s hut.

(7) Follow theGR®®57to the left to go round the Arêtes de la Bruyère and reach the Clôy des Vaches and the GR®® junction.

(8) Leave theGR®®57here and head down to the right, following the Ruisseau du Rif stream; via a series of hairpin bends, reach the mountain pasture hamlet of Alpe du Lauzet. Join theGR®®50here.

(9) Follow this path and continue along it until you reach the Pont de l'Alpe car park (E).

Worth a visit

(4) An alternative route involves heading south-east towards the Col du Chardonnet instead of the Col de Ponsonnière.
You then pass close to old graphite mines (imagine the working conditions). From the pass, join the path that leads to the Col de l'Aiguillette and under the eastern slope of the Aiguilette du Lauzet, before continuing on to the Rif Lanterne and the Pont de l'Alpe without passing through the Alpe du Lauzet.
