(D) From your campsite, head south. At the junction, head towards the school on Route de Vernavant. At the next crossroads, take Route du Bois towards Cessieu, descending to the D1006, Route de Chambéry.
(1) Turn right towards Cessieu Centre. Walk past the École du Château and continue to the traffic lights. Stop at the grocery shop and bakery further on to stock up on supplies for the day, then continue to the next crossroads with a fountain, Place du Plâtre.
(2) Turn left onto the D51A, Rue du Revol. At the end of the street, in the S-bend, head towards Saint-Victor-de-Cessieu and cross the bridge over the A43 motorway.
(3) Immediately after the bridge, turn right towards the station, cross the railway line carefully and turn left onto Route du Pont du Diable, heading towards Sérezin de la Tour, which soon turns south.
(4) Cross the small Pont du Diable bridge and continue due south until you reach the D59A.
(5) Cross the D59A carefully to continue along the Chemin d'Ancone, which joins and runs alongside the A48 motorway until you reach the ‘Give Way’ sign.
(6) At the signpost, turn right onto the D51N and, in front of the cemetery, leave the road to the right onto a track that leads to the tunnel under the A48 motorway.
(7) Go through the tunnel, then turn left off the Route de Saint-Victor at the first bend to continue south on Chemin Jassines.
(8) At the end of this, opposite No. 1041, turn right and follow this road (D51N). Pass the Ponteray service area and continue along the motorway to the hamlet of Montpensier.
(9) Continue on the D51N and turn off the motorway to the right to reach the Torchefelon cemetery.
(10) Pass through the village of Torchefelon, then continue south-west along the D51N. After about 500 m, you will reach a crossroads marked by the small Croix des Poulets.
(11) Continue along the D51N to the right to reach the hamlet of Blassin near a metal cross.
(12) Continue along the D51N until you reach the village of Biol, about 2 km further on.
(13) In Biol, pass the town hall and then the church and continue in this direction. At the traffic lights, head towards Belmont, 2.7 km further on.
(14) At the junction, at a place called Bas Belmont (metal cross on the left), turn left and continue along the Chemin du Denier for about 1.8 km; this road heads south towards Bizonnes. After the crossroads with another metal cross on the left, continue to the Stop sign.
(15) Cross the D51 with care and continue along the D51B until you reach the sewage treatment plant.
(16) Turn right onto Chemin du Château, then continue along Chemin de Tièves. At the fork, veer right onto Chemin de Longechenal. After just over 1 km and a wide left-hand bend, you’ll reach a right-hand bend.
(17) Ignore the small road ahead and head right, towards the south-west. Enter the village via “Vie de Bizonnes” and arrive at the stop sign at the junction with Rue du Violet.
(18) Turn right onto Rue du Violet, then left onto Rue de la Soierie. Pass the town hall and continue to the church.
(19) Turn right along Rue du Francillon. At the stop sign before leaving the town, continue left onto Route du Banchet until the junction with the D1085 at a place called Chez Laurencin.
(20) Turn left, then right a few metres further on; take great care when crossing the road. Head towards La Montagne and enter the hamlet. At the first multi-way junction, keep to the right and reach the second one after about 150 m.
(21) Head down Chemin des Sources, which veers to the left. Pass the Chez Rival lodge and continue to the junction with Chemin de Gondrine, marked by a cross.
(22) Turn right and follow the GR®65. You are now on the Via Gebennensis, the Way of St James route starting in Geneva and leading to Le Puy-en-Velay. Walk a few metres to find a marker informing you that you are on the Way of St James. A football pitch opposite is an ideal spot for camping (A).
Please note: from here on, follow only the GR®65 and its red and white markings. Be wary of the small signs (yellow shells on a blue background) which may lead you astray and take you past a lodge!
Seventh stage of the Way of St James. This stage is mainly in open country with little elevation gain. You walk along the hills and copses of the eastern part of the Liers plain. Here and there, you’ll catch glimpses of the surrounding hills and peaks.
This walk is part of a multi-day hike: The Way of St James from Villards d’Héria to Santiago de Compostela
