Castell Montgri

Tour above Torroella to Castle of Montgri, via Montplà and Garrigars pass.
Superb 360° panorama.

Caution : not very accessible with children, as you have to do a lot of scrambling in the rocks, and there's a steep section in a scree slope.

Description of the walk

Park at Urbaització La Torre, Avinguda d'Andorra.

Follow the red and white GR® signs to the castle.

(S/E) Pass by the house with three garage doors, then climb the hill until you reach a path.

(1) Turn right, then left about 20 m further on, and you'll come to a large picnic area with parking, litter garbage cans and tables.

(2) At the crossroads, go straight ahead and start climbing. At another T-junction, turn left to reach Montplà.

(3) Continue straight on to Coll d'en Garrigars, where four paths cross.

(4) Go straight ahead and climb the rocks, following the red and white signs to the château.

(5) It's possible to enter the castle and access the battlements via a staircase in one of the towers. Then take the path below the castle and follow it to the right.

(6) Turn left, following the yellow arrows that lead to the foot of the climbing routes in a large cavity. Then head for the scree slope.

(7) Go down the scree until you reach the main path, then follow it to the left. You will arrive in Torroella de Montgrí, at the Ronda de Pau Casals. Turn left, then left again 50 m further on, onto the Cami del Xiprer d'en Navarro, running northeast.

(8) Follow the faint path on the right, indicated by logs, which later becomes much more visible. It crosses a pretty pine forest in the shade and then reaches the picnic area.

(2) Turn right, then right again to reach the first fork.

(1) Turn left to rejoin the starting point (S/E).

Not suitable for children. Very difficult and perilous passages in the rocks.

The first part of the walk up to the castle is just magnificent. This section of the route is not very busy, despite the crowds at the start. I highly recommend following this first part of the route, as the views are breathtaking (Estartit, Escala and the Aiguamolls Natural Park).

The second part, after the castle, is very technical and even dangerous if you're not well equipped. It is therefore reserved for thrill-seekers.

For those who just want a pleasant hike without too many technical difficulties, after the castle, you can follow the signposted GR92 route. Then, at the crossroads, head towards the hermitage (which is really nice to see). You can then return to your starting point.

A very nice walk, but you'll need to be equipped with walking boots as there are sections over scree and steep slopes.
Shady at the start and part of the way back. However, most of the route is unobstructed and it's best to bring a supply of water when it's hot.
Magnificent views all along the route, from the sea and the mountains.
The Montgri castle, which you can enter free of charge and walk around, is impressive and very imposing.
A must-see if you're in the area.

hello, hike done with GPS, no problem apart from the part after the chateau, difficult to find the start of the yellow arrows..which I would not recommend to the average walker: steep downhill climb between the rocks, and a passage that my wife couldn't do (hence the return to the top, and taking the white/red Gr to get round it)...
no difficulty in finding the "logs" (two!! on the ground) not necessarily very visible, but they're there! ..nice passage in the pine forest... overall very stony route (good shoes recommended)

A very nice walk with a magnificent view. The descent is a little technical. Nice encounter with the ibex

Hello
More and more tours.
And also in Spain, especially in the north, not far from the south-west of France.
And a few in Italy.
Keep up the good work.

This is a fine, sporty hike with the added bonus of magnificent views and the presence of ibex. However, you'll need to follow your GPS from point 8 as there are no signs on this part of the trail.

For the 1st part, just follow the red and white GR path to the château. Superb, with a herd of ibexes to boot.
For the 2nd part, we found the famous logs by chance, just before the pass! Lovely walk through the woods.

The first part of the walk to the castle is fine.
The second part is pointless. It's very poorly marked (fortunately we had a GPS) because you really wonder where you're going. The scree is steep and slippery. Definitely not to be done in wet weather. It's a shame we didn't go over the pass on the way back to the chapelle sainte Catherine, which is undoubtedly more interesting.
Hiking boots compulsory.

Superb hike.
Quite an easy climb, but not recommended for people with vertigo or who are unsure of the mountains. You have to descend straight down into the rocks, sometimes de-escalating to reach the cave before the scree. And don't slip on the smooth rocks.
The way back through the pine forest is impossible to find using GPS, but it is magnificent and full of ibexes all along the way.

Hi Michel, I'm glad you enjoyed "my" hike, there were indeed logs on the ground to indicate the fork when I did it at the beginning of September but they had to be removed 😟

Very nice section until you reach the château. At point 8, no path indicated by logs. Without a GPS, it's very difficult to find your way around several tracks in the pine forest. North wind to be taken into account on the ascent.
