Canyon des Gueulards via the seven hairpin bends

This unusual spot offers a complete change of scenery, with a crevice that plunges into nowhere and a calm, dark atmosphere among rocky outcrops, lichens and ferns. Access to the canyon is via a track with seven hairpin bends that demonstrate the art of building passages carved into the rock on the mountain side and masonry on the side facing the void.

Description of the walk

To get to the start, follow the D578 and enter the gorge. Pass the access road to the Ferme du Pescher and park a few metres further on, on the left, at the side of the road.

(S/E) Return to the junction with the access road to the Ferme du Pescher and take it. Climb up the seven hairpin bends and arrive at a junction on the plateau.

(1) Turn right and follow the road to the hairpin bend on the right.

(2) Leave the track and descend the path on the left towards the farm below.

(3) A few metres before the farm, turn right and continue to a three-way junction.

(4) Turn left and reach the entrance to the canyon at the bottom of the valley.

(5) Start walking along the fairly narrow canyon between the two cliffs. Pass two sections equipped with steps fixed into the rock, then reach the stream that becomes visible. Pass a small rocky staircase at the water's edge, then continue until you reach the exit on the right, a few metres before a small bridge.

(6) Continue to the right and follow the path uphill to a track.

(7) Follow this road to the right and you will soon find the start of a path on the right.

(8) Take it and follow the track, then gradually move away from it. Continue downhill and, via a gentle slope, through beautiful woodland, rejoin the route you have already taken.

(4) Head left and, following the same route as on the way there, return to the car park at the edge of the D578 (S/E).

Taken on a hot afternoon, as soon as you arrive in the canyon, you feel the coolness and a light breeze, which is a welcome relief on this hot afternoon.
