Cabane d'Estarou

A lovely climb in the shade of the woods, highly recommended on hot days. On arrival, a beautiful view of the Cirque d’Aspe and a lovely picnic spot. Magnificent houses at the start, others currently being restored.

Description of the walk

Park in a small space at the side of the RN134, about a hundred metres past a garage, on the right-hand side of the road if heading towards Somport.

(S/E) Drive very carefully back down the RN134 to the garage: there is no hard shoulder. Take the sharp left-hand bend onto the wide track leading to the bridge over the Gave d’Aspe, where the route joins the GR® de Saint-Jacques de Compostelle.

(1) Cross the bridge, pass the Sayerce farm and reach a junction just before arriving at the Fouillassar farm.

(2) Walk past the farm and come out onto a track which you should follow to the right, keeping to the GR® markings. Reach a pathhead on the left marked by cairns.

(3) Turn left, leaving the GR® to follow a path that is somewhat obstructed at the start due to fallen trees. Climb diagonally through the woods: a few slightly tricky crossings (trekking poles recommended). Emerge onto a pasture with a magnificent view at the Cabane d'Estarou.

(4) Follow the route back in the opposite direction to descend to the car park (S/E).
