Circular path along the banks of the Basse-Zorn

A charming circular walk in the heart of the Basse-Zorn valley, a stone’s throw from Hoerdt, the famous Alsatian capital of asparagus. This peaceful walk takes you through a bucolic and romantic setting, following the water’s course along shaded paths and country lanes. Passing through three typically Alsatian villages with authentic heritage, the route offers a blend of tranquillity and discovery, with no major difficulty thanks to its gentle gradient.

The route takes in Bietlenheim, Geudertheim and Weyersheim, following the peaceful banks of the Zorn. Throughout the walk, you’ll discover Catholic and Protestant churches, old bathing spots, historic mills, wash houses and the picturesque atmosphere of these villages. A getaway combining nature and heritage.

Description of the walk

The car park is located at the roundabout on the corner of Rue du Pont and Rue du Ried, between the road and the supermarket on the right (Lidl), under the trees.

(S/E) Start at the end of the car park, with your back to the roundabout, by turning right onto Rue du Pont. After about 350 m, ignore Rue des Noyers which branches off to the right and continue to Rue de Gambsheim. Take the D94 to the left and cross the bridge over the Zorn. The Weyersheim wash house (1925) is situated on both sides of the Zorn just below the bridge.

(1) Continue straight ahead, crossing Rue Saint-Wolfgang with care. Continue along Rue de l’Échelle, cross Rue de la République straight ahead and continue along Rue Saint-Michel. At the junction with the third street, turn left onto Rue du Docteur Schweitzer, go straight on until you reach the railway tracks. Cross the bridge and follow the path leading off to the left, ignore the first turn-off on the right and follow the path to the trees lining the Feldgraben stream. It then turns right to reach Rue Principale (D747).

(2) Walk carefully along the road to the left for about 200 m, then, turning left and then right, follow Rue Kirchfeld. Continue straight on, continuing along Rue des Lilas until you reach Rue Albert Schweizer. Walk along the pavement on the left until you reach the outskirts of Bietlenheim. On the right is an open space with sports equipment and a table and two benches.

(3) Turn onto the path on the left across the fields and, at the end of it, turn right to reach the banks of the Zorn.

(4) Follow the path on the right which runs alongside the Zorn, go round the sewage treatment plant and arrive at Rue du Général de Gaulle. Follow it on the right along the cycle path to the start of the village of Geudertheim. Enter the village and take the first street on the left, Rue du Chevreuil, which turns left to lead to Rue du Moulin near the Catholic Church of Saint-Blaise (1900).

(5) There are two options:
1) either turn left and walk past the entrance to Schauenbourg Castle (1399) to reach the (7).
2) or turn right to reach Rue du Général de Gaulle, where there are several restaurants, passing the fire station.

(6) Then retrace your steps to the previous junction near the church.

(5) Turn right towards Schauenbourg Castle.
(7) Continue for about fifty metres and turn left into Rue du Moulin, passing the former millers’ farm, the Ulrichs (circa 1690).

(8) Continue left for a few dozen metres to reach the Protestant vicarage (1829).

(9) Continue for another hundred metres to the left along Rue du Presbytère until you reach Rue du Général de Gaulle (D947). Follow this road to the left for about 300 metres. Turn left onto Rue de la Rivière and continue to the small bridge over the River Zorn and its covered wash house, the Geudertheim wash house (1875).

(10) Follow the path to the left along the river to the Geudertheim Mill (1902).

(11) Continue along the riverbank to the Vixels Staj footbridge (1862) at a place called Geudertheim-plage.

(12) The path then leads to a junction just before a stone arch bridge.

(13) Cross the bridge, then cross the D223 road with care and turn right, heading back along the cycle path you used on the way out, following Rue du Général de Gaulle to the next bridge.

(14) Cross it, then turn left and follow the path running alongside the Zorn. About 250 m further on, you’ll notice a beautiful pollarded willow.

(15) Continue along the riverbank for about 2 km to reach the Schiffmatten spawning ground.

(16) Shortly afterwards, you’ll reach the railway viaducts (1855).

(17) 200 m further on, the path reaches the Zorn Diversion Canal.

(18) Turn right and follow it until you reach the D37 county road.

(19) Cross the bridge on the left and walk carefully along the road until you reach a flight of steps on the left.

(20) Go down the steps to avoid walking along the roadside and head towards the fishing pond.

(21) Go round the roundabout and return to the car park on Rue du Pont and Rue du Ried (S/E).

Notes

This walk was mapped out by the Branquignol.e.s, the famous group of epicurean Alsatian hiking friends, and completed in May 2026. Setting off from Weyersheim at around 10 am, you can stop for lunch in Geudertheim at one of the restaurants on Rue du Général de Gaulle.

Most of the paths used are marked with distinctive signage – a fish accompanied by stylised water droplets – installed by the Basse Zorn Community of Communes.
