Along the Moder between Kaltenhouse and Haguenau

Beautiful hike along the Moder from Kaltenhouse to Haguenau, with a tour of the town centre of Haguenau. Very pleasant in spring.

Description of the walk

Departure at the entrance to Kaltenhouse coming from Camp d'Oberhoffen on the D99. Car park at the village hall.

(S/E) From the car park, return via the D99 towards Camp d'Oberhoffen until you reach the bridge over the Moder.
Just before the bridge, take the cycle path on the left along the Moder. Blue Cross signposting
You will pass through a landscape of meadows and fields.

(1) After about 3 km, you pass under the bridge of the new bypass.

(2) Quatre Vents, which marks the entrance to Haguenau with the first houses. At the junction with Rue des Quatre Vents, continue straight ahead along the Moder until you reach a footbridge that leads to the other bank. Continue along the Moder, now on your left, until you reach the D29 road (Route du Rhin) at the bridge.

(3) Cross the D29 but not the bridge. Walk up Rue du Triangle, which is opposite. You will now be walking alongside the Moder discharge canal. You will reach another bridge and continue straight ahead after crossing Rue de l'Ivraie. You will find yourself in a small park with a children's playground. You will reach the Landau roundabout and the Porte de Wissembourg: 'monumental gate opposite, on the other side of the Moder'.

(4) Continue straight ahead, passing under two bridges.

(5) Walk along the Saint-Nicolas Cemetery, then Boulevard Pasteur until you reach the Pont de Bitche bridge and cross the Moder.

(6) Turn right and follow Boulevard de l'Europe towards the SNCF railway station.

(7) Walk past the station and along the small Parc de l'Horloge Fleurie until you reach the next large crossroads.

(8) Cross Boulevard Nessel on the left towards Grand Rue. Admire the flower clock in the park opposite as you pass.
Follow Grand Rue, which becomes a pedestrian street after a few hundred metres. This is the town's main shopping street. Admire the fountain and Saint-Georges Church. Continue straight ahead.

(9) At Place de la République, where the old courthouse is located, continue straight ahead until the next crossroads. Cross and turn right, walking alongside the buildings to find the Moder on your left. (Note that the Moder has been underground through the centre of Haguenau since the late 1950s.)

(10) Tour des Pêcheurs: a remnant of the city walls, this is an iconic building in the city and one of the most beautiful spots with the riverbanks below.
Continue along the Quai des Pêcheurs to the junction with Rue du Canal, where you turn left.
At the roundabout, cross the road and go over the bridge to return to the intersection you passed on the way there.

(3) Take the cycle path on the right that runs alongside the Moder and return, via the same route as on the way there, to the car park at the village hall (S/E).
