Circular via Méthamis from Blauvac

This hike takes you through two magnificent Provençal villages: Blauvac, perched on a limestone ridge since the 12th century, with superb views of Mont Ventoux to the north and the Monts de Vaucluse to the south, and Méthamis, a historic village built on a rocky promontory at the exit of the Gorges de la Nesque, where traces of Neolithic dwellings were discovered during archaeological excavations. Descending from the summit of Gacholle towards Méthamis, the remains of drystone shelters, shepherds' shelters and sheep pens line the path. Information panels tell you about the harsh life of our ancestors.

Description of the walk

Arrive in Blauvac via the D150 and park in the town hall car park opposite the La Paved Slanting Street restaurant. If there are no spaces available, you can park in the large car park near the cemetery.

(S/E) With your back to the town hall, admire the magnificent view of Gacholle mountain, where the hiking trail passes through to reach Méthamis. From the town hall, walk past the church on the right, Rue du Nord, and descend the path that follows it to reach the Les Bosquets sign.

(1) Turn right towards Villes-sur-Auzon, Notre-Dame des Neiges. The descent is rocky and a little steep. You will arrive at a crossroads.

(2) Turn left onto the clearly visible path through the trees, ignoring the first, less visible path on the left, which runs almost parallel to the descent. Cross a road and take Chemin de la Chapelle opposite, towards Villes-sur-Auzon and Grand Vallat. Cross another road and you will arrive at the Notre-Dame des Neiges chapel.

(3) You can take a short break here: there is a table and bench. Continue straight ahead until you reach the Grand Vallat sign.

(4) Cross the D14 and take the track opposite that climbs to the top of La Gacholle, ignoring all the paths that branch off to the left or right of the track.Enjoy the magnificent views of Mont Ventoux, the Monts de Vaucluse and, in the distance, the Dentelles de Montmirail.

(5) Continue to the Le Grand Corps sign.

(6) Leave the track and take the junction with the GR®91 on the right.

(7) Stop briefly at the Vue sur les Coulins sign, which offers a beautiful view of the hills opposite. Continue south-west.

(8) At the large cairn, don't miss the path that descends to the left, like a balcony above the exit of the Gorges de la Nesque, which is quite steep at the beginning. Stay on the marked path and enjoy magnificent views of Méthamis. Reach the Les Dévens sign where the path joins the usually dry bed of the Nesque (caution! Do not venture here during a storm).

(9) Set off from here, heading towards Près de la Grand Font, and continue along the tarmac road.

(10) Turn right towards the village of Méthamis. There is not much traffic, but be careful.

(11) Take the stairs on the right, a shortcut to the wash house (there is drinking water). Continue up the road, then take a small path on the right before reaching the church, and head for the cross (on the rock on the left). This is a good spot for a picnic, as there is a bench.

(12) Retrace your steps, climb up to the church and visit it if it is open. Descend to the village via Avenue des Baudaires, passing the town hall.

(11) Take the road on the right. Watch out for traffic. Continue along Route de Malemort (D5) until you reach a path on the right (PR®, marked in yellow).

(13) Leave the road, pass the water treatment plant on your left and cross a ford.Go up a small tarmac road and continue to the Abbaye Notre-Dame de Bon Secours. (If there is still work being done at the water treatment plant, continue along the road and take the first right turn, which will also allow you to avoid the ford if there is too much water). You will arrive at a road.

(14) Take the hairpin bend to reach the abbey. You can visit the church and the shop, which often has interesting temporary exhibitions, original souvenirs, wooden toys and local products.

(15) Retrace your steps back to the road.

(14) To avoid this, take the path opposite which climbs uphill and, at the new junction with the road, continue to the right on this road to reach the car park (S/E).

Notes

The hike is not difficult, with a level 3 effort, IBP 57, fairly easy technicality (2) and fairly low risk (2). Walking poles will be useful for the descent from the summit of Gacholle to Méthamis. There is drinking water near the old wash house at the entrance to Méthamis (11).

Worth a visit

In Blauvac: 12th-century castle and Saint-Sébastien Church.

Notre-Dame des Neiges Chapel: the chapel was formerly known as Notre-Dame-de-Blaise. It is located on the site of an ancient Celto-Ligurian oppidum. It seems that it has been known as Notre-Dame-des-Neiges since it snowed in August.

Notre-Dame de Bon Secours Abbey.

In Méthamis: the Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul with its unique three-arched bell tower and its gilded wooden virgin inside.

A beautiful hike in the sunshine, offering stunning views. The climb to the summit of La Gacholle is a little steep, but the panoramic views are beautiful
On the descent, see the fascinating restored drystone shelters.
When we arrived at Méthamis (great view of the village), just after point 10, we decided to take the small path that winds between the cacti to climb up to the village, thus avoiding the return trip from point 11 to point 12.
The only slight downside is the road at the end, so keep your energy reserves intact, as the climb to Blauvac is quite steep...
We recommend this beautiful hike.

A pleasant hike despite the cold weather, much less wind than in the Rhône valley, a bit too much tarmac on the way back to Methamis.

A very pleasant and varied hike. There is a steep climb around the 4th kilometre, but it is rewarded with a beautiful view from the ridge.
