Western circular of La Tour-sur-Tinée

A very beautiful hike with a variety of trails and vegetation, enhanced by a village classified as a historical monument to discover. Take into account the practical information mentioned in the description regarding the period and the off-trail section.

⚠️ GPS or app essential for this hike! Avoid the winter period, as the rocks near the rivers are slippery.

Description of the walk

Park behind the Saint-Sébastien Chapel, marker 4.

(S/E) From the chapel, head towards La Tour-sur-Tinée via the M32 road

(1) Once you have passed the bend, just after the crossroads, take a path on the left leading uphill towards the cross at the top of the slope. The path is barely visible. At the Route de la Tour, take the path opposite; the antenna is an excellent landmark to aim for. Just before the top, the path passes between rocks on the left.

(2) Pass to the left of the antenna and follow the carriage road that runs alongside the cemetery. At the bend, take the cement path down to the right to reach the village. Pass in front of the town hall and head for the fountain in the village's Grand Place. A break is in order in front of so many historic sites.

(3) Take the Montée du Puits on the left. Continue, cross a small square, then go down the steps to reach the Chapelle des Pénitents Blancs. Pass to the side of it to follow Rue de la Casette and reach a crossroads.

(4) Pass to the left of the remarkable wash house and head towards the nearby oil mill. The trail starts right next to the mill's entrance door and passes under the Route des Granges: marker 5, towards Pont du Brusc. White and red GR® markings.

(5) In the Ginoire valley, the Pont de Brusc bridge has disappeared. Arrows painted on rocks guide hikers across the river without getting wet. Here, you can see the damage caused by recent storms. Continue to the next trail junction.

(6) Turn left towards Pont de Tournefort. The trail is sometimes carved into the cliff, then joins a track. Follow it to the right until you reach a cairn marking a crossroads.

(7) Cairn. Turn left onto the track, which quickly turns into a path. This path enters the forest and passes to the right of the second electricity pylon (marker 7 is missing because it is incorrectly positioned on the map). You will reach a crossroads with a cairn: this is the end of the red and white markings.

No markings

(8) Cairn. Turn left. The path is pleasant but disappears after about 400 m. Please note: the route suggested here is off-trail: using the Visorando app or a GPS may be helpful. In this area, the path has disappeared and vegetation has reclaimed the land.

(9) Weave your way through the broom to reach the second ruin, the southernmost one. From this precise spot, descend two terraces heading west. Then turn left onto this old "cultivated plot" which brings us closer to the river. It gives access to a set of stones forming a staircase below (see photo). Be careful, as these areas require vigilance: climb over trees, don't hesitate to sit down and climb down the stone "steps" to safely reach the riverbed. Walk up the riverbed for a few metres, on the right, at a vertical plastic gutter, stones also forming steps (see photo) provide access to the path. This river crossing is on the north-facing side, so the surroundings are damp. Then follow the well-marked wooded path.

(10) At the tarmac road, turn left for about ten metres without walking on the road and take the path on the left going uphill: marker 3.

Yellow markings

(11) At Route de la Tour, turn left: be careful of traffic. After the right-hand bend, turn left onto the path: the yellow markings are present but discreet. The gently sloping path leads to the village sports facilities and the car park (S/E).

The river, which you cross twice, is normally one metre wide and 20 cm deep at the crossing points.
Do not hike the day after a storm: there is a risk of danger.

Do not hike in winter, as the riverbanks are slippery.

GPS or Visorando app essential between points (8) and (10).
Hiking boots and walking sticks are recommended. Rocky terrain.
There is a water source at the entrance to La Tour-sur-Tinée.

The Brasque donkeys graze in the valley and clear the brush in the commune. Please behave appropriately to avoid any incidents.

Between points 8 and 10, the trail is very poorly maintained, if at all, which is why it is important to follow the Visorando app. I should point out that you have to walk through the donkey enclosure, where the donkeys are magnificent and friendly. At the river crossing, the ground was very slippery and we had to make sure the large stones were stable before stepping on them. The exit from the river is difficult (a bit of climbing). Otherwise, it's a magnificent hike and the village of La Tour sur Tinée is well worth a visit.

Thank you very much Annsofi for your comments.
Between points 8 and 9, the trail disappears.
The GPS track is useful in this case.
Have a nice evening.

The path between points 8 and 10 is indeed very difficult to find and, in wet weather, quite treacherous... To climb back up after crossing the river, you have to use your hands.
Hike done in January, not very interesting apart from the village of La Tour, which is very beautiful.

I would say that this hike was 'sporting' and very worrying at one point between No. 8 and 9. There is absolutely NO path to follow. You are lost and have to make your own way. Sometimes, after about 500 m in this terrain, we found 3 stones together, like a cairn. We never saw the ruin mentioned in the description (No. 9), but somehow we got down to the river. The descent is very steep. You have to hold on to saplings and zigzag down. The leaves on the ground are slippery. When you come to the river, there are cliff walls of about 3-5 metres on both sides. How to get down? you think. By luck, we ended up where the description meant us to be. The stones, boulders, are round and very slippery going down. Once in the riverbed, you have to start looking for a way up. We managed to climb up the other side using the 'stairs' on our hands and knees. Once on the other side, the path is fully visible and easy to walk on. In my group of six, all between 64 and 78 years old, only two of us enjoyed this adrenaline rush, one hated it and was scared, and the other three just made the best of the situation. It was an adventure, and personally, I love adventures.

A very pleasant hike at this altitude during this season. The passage through La Tour-sur-Tinée, which is very authentic, adds to the enjoyment of the route. We had to extend the circuit a little by skipping points 8 to 10, which required the Visorando app (our iPhone was out of battery), and continuing along the GR to the Tinée road, (a stretch made unpleasant by the heavy traffic on this road, but fortunately quite short). The final climb to the Chapel of St Sébastien in the late afternoon is very pleasant.
