Pays Vizillois Circular Route

Route via the hamlets of Monjean, Chachatier and Vaulnaveys.
Pleasant scenery and the chance to discover old mountain hamlets.
Much of the route has the advantage of being through woodland and in the shade on the western slope, allowing you to set off without being tied to a specific time.
The downside of the walk is a bit (too much) of a tarmac surface. Not recommended for those with allergies.

Description of the walk

Park in the small car park on the outskirts of Vizille towards Vaulnaveys. Do not stray onto the forest track.

(S/E) Take theGR®549, marked in red and white, heading north-east. Join thePR® junction above the houses at Les Corniers.

(1) At this first junction, follow the path climbing to the left on theGR®549towards Monjean. Make a wide circular loop to the right to reach a fountain and a new junction.

(2) Leave theGR®549straight ahead and take the path on the left marked with thePR® sign, now marked in yellow or red. Continue slightly uphill to reach the first houses of Chachatier.

(3) Stay on thePR® by following the markings and, through the forest, reach Le Coin.

(4) Continue along the road, and at the bend, head straight on to reach the hamlet of Les Alloues. Follow thePR® route all the way to the crossroads just before Preydières.

(5) Turn onto the path on the left, joining a road at the entrance to the hamlet of Les Meynards. Continue to reach the junction with the Promenade de la Mondée.

(6) Turn left onto this road, cross the Révols district and turn right onto Chemin de la Mairie. Cross the D254 and reach the Muriannes junction, continuing to follow the PR® markings.

(7) Turn right onto Chemin des Muriannes and, at the T-junction, turn left onto Promenade de la Lavée. Cross the hamlet of Les Pelliets, continue straight ahead and, at the next junction, take the path (still thePR®) to reach a Y-junction.

(8) Leave thePR® on your right and follow the path to the left. Pass under the power line and walk along the edge of the woods.

(9) Return to the road, follow it and enter Vizille.

(10) Cross “Vieux Vizille”, heading south until you reach the tunnel. Go through the tunnel to reach a path on the right crossing the canal; turn immediately left and follow theGR®549to the starting car park (S/E).

Track and road. Lots of mud in places. No difficulties. A leisurely ride.

This was a reconnaissance hike for a group of senior citizens; the best car park to use is the Locomotive car park. For the return journey, we took a slight detour from point 8; rather than the tedious return route across the plain, we opted for a slightly more challenging route (around 140m of elevation gain) via the Aup du Seuil, returning via the cemetery and the historic district of Château de Paille.

It’s not a particularly well-known walk among locals; they tend to park at the locomotive behind Vizille Castle. The car park shown on this map isn’t easy to find. The walk is actually closer to 15 km. Well worth a visit.

It really is a lovely route. In my opinion, the best place to start is the car park behind the Locomotive games hall, just past the tunnel, and follow the path towards the little bridge that crosses the stream.
On the way back, take the opportunity to ‘visit’ the old village known as the ‘straw castle’; you might also pass by the old king’s castle, now in ruins (with a tower offering a view). You’ll cross a leafy park which is closed in winter (check the dates at the entrance). On the way out, veer slightly off the route and you’ll emerge at the foot of Lesdiguières Castle; simply head back along Rue du Général de Gaulle and rejoin the route at the tunnel.
