Circular loop around Dannemarie-sur-Crète

A lovely, easy walk around Dannemarie-sur-Crète. Beautiful views of the foothills of the Jura and the outskirts of Besançon. You’ll alternate between dirt tracks, forest paths and grassy trails.
The second part of the circular walk takes you through more rural landscapes, where you’ll discover an area created by schoolchildren (well worth a visit) and a disused wash house. You can therefore choose to do all or part of this walk, as you wish.

Description of the walk

Park in the church square.

(S/E) A little further on, on the right, take Rue du Cras. Walk past the houses on the edge of the forest, then follow the meadows. You’ll reach the barrier blocking the road.

(1) Then take the path branching off to the right and entering the woods. After a right-hand bend, continue along this descending path. Join a better-marked path, follow it to the left for about a hundred metres, then turn left onto a more undulating track and rejoin the original ridge path, which you should follow to the right. Continue on until you reach the water tower.

(2) Take the Chemin des Grands Champs, which winds sharply to your right. Cross the copse and follow the grassy track running alongside the hedges to reach Rue du Stade. Turn right onto it and continue along Route de Dannemarie, leaving the Chemin de la Potte on your right.

(3) Turn left onto a lovely path that soon enters the forest. Then turn right onto a straight track that joins the tarmac road. Turn left onto it, cross the forest and reach the railway bridge.

(4) Leave the road without crossing it and turn right onto the Sentier des Champs Cuchot. In the small wood, as you catch sight of the first houses, look out for the small path on the right.

(5) You will then enter the village. Turn left onto Rue à l’Orée des Pins, cross Rue du Quetis and continue straight ahead onto Rue des Vignes Bousson. At a sharp right-hand bend, leave the street and take the Sentier de la Nouelle, which goes straight on and leads to Rue des Chanets. Turn right and head towards Place de l'Église.

(S/E) Walk past your car park again and start the second part of the circular route. Walk down Rue du Pontot.

(6) Turn right onto Chemin du Paquier. Cross the woods and follow the meadows to reach a three-way junction.

(7) Keep left. At the sharp right-hand bend, turn left onto a path that runs alongside the fields at the edge of a hedge.

(8) At the first junction, take the path on the left . You will walk alongside a natural wetland area with a spring, a pond and various plantings created by the village children. Take the time to explore it. Continue on and pass an old disused wash house before reaching the road. Turn left and follow it for about fifty metres.

(9) Take the small path on the left as you come out of the bend and rejoin Rue du Pontot. Turn left to head back up to the village and return to your car park (S/E).

A lovely walk close to the town and its main roads, yet very peaceful and surrounded by nature. The forest has plenty of (new) paths and trails where it can sometimes be tricky to follow the route. With a GPS and a few trips back and forth, you’ll manage just fine.

Between Dannemarie and Chemaudin, there’s an area well worth exploring on an easy hike. It would be good to add details of the interesting features to look out for in the small wood just after point 1. The tree with another tree growing through it is quite a sight. I’d recommend this hike to residents of Besançon who’d like to explore this area, which doesn’t often spring to mind.

A very pleasant walk in the countryside near Besançon.
At (6) I didn’t turn off. I took the botanical trail which branches off to the right at the fire hydrant. Charming. A reconstructed drystone shelter with very basic wooden figures and a small wild boar. I recommend this trail. Opposite the start is a large oak tree (President).

Discover this village off the beaten track... it’s interesting to see Dannemarie on the edge of the woods
