Muret loop via Col de l'Aigleton, Cime de la Jasse and La Bédina

This superb circular hike in the Belledonne massif starts at the Muret car park. The route leads to Lac de la Coche, then crosses the slopes of Roches Jaunes before following the Ruisseau du Clétat and climbing the Col de L'Aigleton. It descends the steep opposite slope, passes the charming little Lacs du Vénétier, then climbs to the Col de la Jasse and reaches the Cime de la Jasse via the ridge. It drops down into the Vallon de la Jasse, passes over the crest of the Montagne de Bédina, and follows a wide track to Plan Cortillets. It crosses the forest to reach Gros Caillou and then Pré de l'Arc, finally taking a gently sloping forest track to complete the loop.

Description of the walk

By car: from the motorway, take the Brignoud exit. In the town centre, at the junction with the D523, follow the D528 opposite, towards Laval-en-Belledonne. Pass through this village, then the hamlets of Mollard and Fuzier. In Prabert, turn right towards La Betta via the Pré de L'Arc road. At the Pont de la Betta car park, continue for 500 m to park at the Muret car park, located 13 km from Brignoud.

(S/E) Reach the hairpin bend at the end of the road. At the sign for "Le Muret (alt. 1343 m)", climb (east) towards Aiguebelle, along a damp, stony path marked in yellow. You will reach a crossroads (alt. 1410 m), opposite a concrete pumping station.

(1) Leave the tracks on the right and left, pass in front of the footbridge and immediately turn right onto the dirt track leading to the Habert d'Aiguebelle refuge. At an altitude of 1,430 m, take the shortcut across the fields and after 150 m you will rejoin the track. Alternate between shortcuts and the track to reach a fork (altitude 1,720 m).

(2) At the "Aiguebelle" sign, ignore the track on the left towards Habert d'Aiguebelle and take the path slightly to the right, towards Pas de la Coche and the pass to the right of the high-voltage power lines. Cross a small stream and, after a winding climb, reach the pass. Follow a small stream and climb up to the Pas de la Coche crossroads (altitude 2,000 m) overlooking Lac de la Coche.

(3) At the "Pas de la Coche" sign, ignore the path leading down to the charming little Lac de La Coche just below and the GR®738 on the right towards the Brèche de la Roche Fendue. Take the path on the left, marked in yellow, towards the Col de la Vache. Stay at the pass. After about 50 metres, you will come to another intersection (altitude 2,000 m).

(4) Leave the GR® de Pays on your right, which descends towards the lake and then the village of Rivier d'Allemont. Continue along the yellow-marked trail through a gap up to a small pass (altitude 2,020 m). Once you have crossed it , descend about 50 metres through the blueberry bushes. Climb diagonally up a scree slope and, after a narrow passage on a steep slope, you will reach an intersection (altitude 2,006 m).

(5) At the "Sous le Pas du Pin" sign, leave the trail on the right, descending towards the GR® de Pays. Continue opposite towards the Col de la Vache, cross two scree couloirs and climb up a hill to follow the Ruisseau du Cléta on your right. Join the GR®738 (altitude 2075 m).

(6) Do not cross the stream to reach the "Roches Jaunes" sign opposite, but climb straight up the GR®738 on the same bank. Gradually move away from the stream and, on the left (north-west), climb the scree slopes on the side of the valley. Continue climbing (west) to reach the Col de l'Aigleton (altitude 2,260 m).

(7) At the "Col de l'Aigleton" sign, head towards the Lacs du Vénétier. On the GR®738, descend (south-west) the steep slope on the opposite side. At the bottom of the valley, head north-west to the lower Lac du Vénétier. Climb slightly to reach an intersection (altitude 2,090 m).

(8) At the "Lacs du Vénétier" sign, climb up the yellow-marked trail on the right towards the Cime de la Jasse (north-northeast). Pass by other Lacs du Vénétier lakes, each as charming as the next. Climb (north-west) up the sunny side of the valley via numerous switchbacks and reach the Col de la Jasse (altitude 2377 m).

(9) At the pass, ignore the path on the left. On the right (north-east) on the ridge, follow the yellow marked path and you will reach a fork (altitude 2,377 m).

(10) At the sign for "Sous la Cime de la Jasse", ignore the path descending to the left. Continue on the yellow-marked path climbing gently opposite. With the Cime de la Jasse in sight, avoid the path straight up the slope and go around it in a spiral to the right until you reach the summit (altitude 2478).

(11) Retrace your steps to return to the previous fork.

(10) At the sign for "Sous la Cime de la Jasse", follow the direction of Crête de la Bédina in the opposite direction to the right. Descend the steep northern slope in a series of switchbacks. Go around a rocky outcrop, then head west. Cross a valley and descend its left bank in tight switchbacks. As the slope levels out, head northwest to a grassy ridge at an altitude of around 2,120 metres. Go around some large rocks and cross the slope on a descending path (west) to reach a crossroads.

(12) Ignore the path on the left, which is almost level and crosses a steep slope to reach the Col de la Bédina, as well as the path descending to the right. Descend gently westwards to an intersection near the Lac ski lift.

(13) On the right, ignore the path coming from Lac de la Jasse and, opposite, the one that climbs the hill overlooking Col de la Bédina. On the left, off the path, climb the grassy slope to reach Col de la Bédina (elevation 1989) and the top of the ski lift.

(14) At the pass, ignore the path on the left coming from the crossroads (12) and the one opposite descending towards the Chalet de Bédina above. On the right (north-west), take the horizontal path along the side of the hill, leaving the path that climbs it. Join the ridge path as it descends. Continue along the ridge, scrambling down a few very steep sections before reaching the wide platform of a track (altitude 1,820 m).

(15) Ignore the directions on the "Crête de la Bédina" sign. Continue along the track opposite (north-west), ignoring the paths branching off to the left, and further on you will come to a fork. On the left, ignore the Téléski de l'Ardoisière track. On the right, descend the grassy slope to reach a crossroads.

(16) Ignore the La Bédina ski trail on the left and, on the right, the La Clapierre trail and the forest trail going in the opposite direction. Take the track straight ahead, which leads to the platform of the Bouquetins chairlift upper station (altitude 1568). Note the two hiking signs on the slope to the left (south-west). Go to the nearest one.

(17) At the "Plan Cortillets" sign, follow the direction of Gros Caillou on the left. Shortly afterwards, at the intersection at the edge of the forest, ignore the mountain bike trail descending to the right and continue straight ahead on the horizontal path marked in yellow/red. Carefully cross the mountain bike trails and join the Bédina ski slope.

(18) Opposite, gently climb the Combe de la Bédina. At an altitude of around 1,630 metres, leave it at the left-hand bend and continue along the yellow/red trail on the right. Cross the pasture fence and you will reach an intersection at the foot of a huge rock (elevation 1,640 metres).

(19) At the "Le Gros Caillou" sign, head towards Colonie du Pré de l'Arc on the right (south). Cross a small stream and leave the pasture. Continue through the forest (west) until you reach an intersection.

(20) At the sign for "Colonie du Pré de l'Arc", ignore the signs to the right and left. Continue along the unmarked path opposite. After about 200 m, you will come to a track leading to the Colonie du Pré de l'Arc.

(21) Take it opposite, then go around the colony with a wide 180° left turn. Pass in front of the buildings, ignore a path on the right, then another on the left. Cross a bridge and, after a long and pleasant descent into the forest, ignore the path on the left leading to point (1). Shortly afterwards, you will reach the car park (S/E).
