Description of the walk

Park on the Place du Champ de Foire, between the René Roussey School and the Crédit Agricole.

(S/E) Walk down Rue de la Liberté, cross Rue de la Poste, follow Rue du Faubourg, then veer slightly right and left, passing the town hall and the church. Continue along Rue des Boucheries until you reach Rue Charles de Gaulle, where you turn right. Turn again into Rue de la Libération, then immediately left into Rue de la Craie.
Pass the roundabout and arrive at the junction of Rue des Terreaux and Chemin du Chazeaux.

(1) Turn right towards the forest onto Chemin du Chazeaux. After the steep concrete climb, take a beautiful white track on the left. You’ll reach a right-angled junction where there’s a hunting hut.

(2) Continue straight ahead downhill; a few notable trees are marked, as well as the Source des Baraques. You’ll reach a pretty little bridge over a stream where a picnic table is available.

(3) Continue along the path to the left; you will soon reach an inverted Y-junction.

(4) Make a turn of almost 180°, taking the Chemin des Cordes on the right (ignore the path on the left). Continue and you will come out into a field. Head towards the houses, keeping to the right until you reach the main road via the path above the village. Cross the D13 and follow it to the right for 100m.

(5) Leave the road and turn right, continuing in the same direction but along the towpath. Reach the bridge.

(6) Pass under the bridge and you will soon reach the lock on the Rhône-Rhine Canal, known as Lock No. 58a at Roset-Fluans.

(7) Continue along the towpath to the junction with the Chemin des Fins.

(8) Turn right onto this path to reach the sports ground.

(9) Continue past the gate, climb the steps alongside the fence. You’ll emerge onto Rue de la Tour, which certainly lives up to its name. Turn left, then right up the short, steep slope. At the junction with the D13, turn left into Rue des Jardins. Take thesecond right, cross Rue du Moulin du Pré, and reach Place du Champ de Foire (S/E) via the one-way street (residents only) or via Rue de la Poste.

Worth a visit

You may be able to see a lock in operation. Don’t forget the remarkable trees in the Bois d’Ambre.

The only problem is finding point 1 on the route, as the street and lane names aren’t very obvious; we couldn’t find any signs for ‘Rue du Chazeaux’, and the sign for Rue des Terreaux isn’t visible from the main road. We ended up going as far as the recycling centre before checking the map and realising we’d gone the wrong way.

Apart from that, it was a lovely, varied and very pleasant route.

It was a Saturday with few people in the woods but plenty on the towpath.

I went on this walk to take my dog for a walk. I just skipped the start and began straight at point 1. The section through the woods is brilliant

A pleasant walk, but only the stretch through the Bois d'Ambre will make you (partially) forget civilisation. Unfortunately, it’s rather short compared to the full route. The walk along the Doubs and past the locks is pleasant, but be warned: it quickly becomes sweltering in summer (as it’s a tarmac greenway).
