Circular walk around Villars-Saint-Georges via the Combe d’Arange

A lovely little walk around Villars-Saint-Georges that will take you through meadows and woods, across a pretty valley, to the banks of the Doubs before heading back up into the large forest. A family walk where you might (with a bit of luck) spot deer, foxes and a variety of birds.

Description of the walk

The start is at a junction of the D400 with a dirt track coming in from the right, before the hairpin bend leading up to the village.

(S/E) Take the D400 on your right to reach the village. Turn left and shortly afterwards, take Rue de l’Église on your right.

(1) At the fork, turn left onto the Route de Fourg and follow it, ignoring the various paths you come across. At the Petit Villars junction, turn left in front of the two houses. Continue until you reach the right-hand hairpin bend.

(2) Then leave the tarmac road and head straight on along the dirt track leading down in front of you.
Carry on until you reach the edge of the woods and come out onto pastureland.

(3) Turn left onto the Jules César embankment and follow it until you reach the A-road.
You will probably need to open gates enclosing the pastures. Please remember to close them properly. The farmers let us cross their land, so let’s avoid letting the animals escape.
When you reach the D101, turn right.

(4) After 50m, leave the road and take a farm track on the left that runs alongside the forest. After a good kilometre, you will see a lovely white track on the left that ends after 100m.

(5) Turn left and follow it along a more or less well-marked track.
Head right onto the road until you reach the junction.

(6) At the junction of the D400 and D408, take the stony track that climbs to the left, running alongside a property. Enter the woods, following theGR® red and white markings.

(7) Further on, take a path branching off at right angles to the left. Turn quickly right, then left again to leave the forest. The track is very well marked on the ground and signposted on the trees.

You will then reach your car park by following the path (S/E).

Notes

Although easy and suitable for families, this walk is not accessible to pushchairs due to the pastures to be crossed and the gates to be passed through.

Worth a visit

As you reach the white path at the edge of the forest, you will see the hunting lodge on your right. You can go there and see the entrance to the chasm known as “Le Creux à Pépé” (protected by a gate) just along the path, marked by information boards.

Hello and thank you for your feedback.
Sorry for this minor inconvenience, but when I walked it in 2018, the path was very clear with different crops on either side. The farmer has no doubt changed his practices.
Have a lovely evening and enjoy your walks

An easy walk with no difficulties. At one point you have to cross several fields; luckily I had the route on the app, otherwise you could end up wandering around for ages!!! A nice little walk to stretch your legs.

Hello. Thank you for your feedback. It’s true that crops can change from one year to the next, but a bit of common sense should help everyone avoid any misunderstandings with the farmers. Have a good day and enjoy your walks

This route is best done before the summer; we had to cross fields of wheat.
