Description of the walk

Park in the boules court car park at the entrance to the village, at the bottom of Rue de la Mairie.

(S/E) After the boules court, take the grassy Chemin de la Bécasse, which runs alongside the stream of the same name.

(1) Just before the footbridge, take a sunken path that climbs up to the left. Opposite the house, take the stony path that branches off to the right (view of the barns on either side of the hillsides). Follow it to a junction with a road: be careful, as this is a dangerous crossroads.

(2) Turn right for a few dozen metres, then turn left onto a dirt track at the bend. Walk along the Cheynes property and continue straight ahead to reach the reservoir (panoramic viewpoint). After 100 m, the path leads to a road; turn right towards the retirement home. Walk along the side of the home, then continue on the track which begins to descend and leads to a crossroads with the hamlet of Marensac and its barn on the left.

(3) Continue straight ahead along the embankment. After the vineyard, the path curves to the right (panoramic viewpoint), then descends for 600 metres to a house.

(4) At the bottom of the valley, turn right to follow the Ruisseau de Passet stream. Continue straight ahead on the tarmac road lined with plane trees. After 700 m, pass in front of the Lance farm and follow the main road to the crossroads located about 50 metres before the D16c.

(5) Continue straight ahead and quickly turn left to pass in front of the calvary. Cross the D16c carefully and climb up to the church and its presbytery.

(6) Turn back to the crossroads.

(5) Turn left onto Chemin de la Satte. After the bend, leave the road continuing on the right and take the grassy path opposite that runs alongside the Ruisseau de la Bécasse.

(1) Continue straight ahead to the starting point (S/E).

Worth a visit

Landscapes:

  • panorama of the Hers valley, churches of Belberaud and Escalquens, village of Odars and the Pyrenees from the reservoir between (2) and (3).
  • Viewpoint over the hill of Montlaur Castle and the bell towers of Montlaur and Belberaud.

Heritage:

  • Bordes: name given to the dairy farms located on either side of the Lauragais hillsides. These dwellings face south and are oriented in the direction of the two prevailing winds: the Cers (west wind) and the Autan (east wind).
  • Saint-Jean-Baptiste Church: listed as a historic monument since 1995. Damaged two years after its completion, the parish church was only rebuilt from its ruins in 1986. The church is very interesting for its diversity, its succession of well-defined architectural styles, its fresco paintings and its Roman portal. All that remains of the old Romanesque church is this portal. However, most of the building is Gothic in style. The buttresses supporting the ribbed vaults are relatively massive. These supports penetrate the building, defining spaces in which the chapels are housed. In the 19th century, the bell tower was replaced by a polygonal bell tower in the Neo-Romanesque style.

A short barefoot walk for me, as always, from 6pm to 8pm, setting off at dusk and arriving at night. No risk of injury on the ground, but watch out for the road section covered in stones, haha. A peaceful route, not the great adventure you might find in the mountains, of course, but here it will be calm fields, a pleasure. The dog loved it too. I recommend it even more barefoot, haha. Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes. I'm without shoes, so 1 hour with them on, I imagine.

A beautiful, easy hike on the hillsides.
A bit muddy in winter between points 3 and 4, then between point 5 and the finish.

A lovely, easy walk. Very few tarmac roads, and when there are, they are not very busy. Grass paths rather than muddy ones, changing landscapes of the Lauragais region with a stop at the beautiful church in Belberaud. Views of the Pyrenees. A pleasant outing, best avoided on very windy days.
