Description of the walk

Park in the Charvet car park near a telecommunications mast.

(S/E) Turn left onto the track leading to Peyra Juana, then immediately turn right to take the lovely path running parallel to the Tabuc track. Continue at a leisurely pace until you reach this track at the Tabuc bridge.

(1) Cross the bridge, continue along the well-marked grassy track and join the Sagnières path. Turn left onto it and begin an easy climb. Shortly after a hairpin bend, you’ll reach the Sagnières chalets.

(2) Continue straight ahead, past the Les Grangettes sign, and, following a path with a mix of gentle ascents and descents, cross a few streams, including the Ruisseau des Prés des Fonts, to reach the Les Grangettes chalets.
Note on this section: it does not appear on the 1:25,000 map, but it is definitely there and is even marked in yellow, albeit a very pale shade.

(3) Continue downhill and then cross the Tabuc via a footbridge. Carry on to the left along the wide track until you reach a clearly visible junction, though there are no signposts.

(4) Turn right and continue along the hillside on this beautiful path. Ford the Torrent de la Selle and rejoin theGR®54at the next junction. Take it to the left to reach the Charvet chalets.

(5) Stay on theGR® and complete the descent, then join the Peyra Juana track; take it to the left to return to the Charvet car park (S/E).

Worth a visit

The three villages you pass through – Les Sagnères, Les Grangettes and Charvet – each have a chapel in excellent condition. The commune of Monêtier-les-Bains is, in fact, particularly rich in religious heritage; see here.

A beautiful hike, difficult to follow without GPS tracking. With tracking, it is easy to find the path.
Note that the first Tabuc bridge has been removed since the last review on 11/08. A detour has been created, but it requires taking a very narrow and steep path that leads to the next bridge upstream, then back down to the left bank to return to point 1. It is better to take the path on the right just 50 metres after the car park, then after crossing the Tabuc, take the path on the left that goes back up to point 1.
Work to rebuild the bridge has begun, I believe...

We had trouble finding the car park at the start of the hike. The GPS coordinates were incorrect.
Secondly, the description needs to be more precise. For example, at the start of the hike, after the bridge, there are two options. Immediately to the right after the bridge or a little further on, to the right. We took the first option and ended up doing the loop, but the description no longer matched. Fortunately, there were directional signs all along the way, so we followed those instead of the description.

A very pleasant, mostly shaded walk. After Les Grangettes, we extended the route along the Le Grand Tabuc stream with a round trip to Champ Vieux (1,930 m) before heading back to Monêtier via the usual route.

Thank you for the description of this route. It’s lovely in the late afternoon as it’s completely shaded. There are pretty streams, beautiful views over the valley, and the historic charm of the three chapels and barns. The climb is steep in places, but the path is in very good condition and easy to walk on, so it’s a real pleasure. To be honest, we’d set off expecting a simple, unpretentious hike in the hills, but we came back absolutely beaming.
