Boucle des Murailles à Saint-Amand-de-Coly

From stone to stone, a lovely walk amidst low stone walls and stone huts. A clear view over the Chironde valley. This is a leisurely stroll that immerses us in the recent past and bears witness to the craftsmanship of our ancestors. A delightful route through the heart of the Périgord’s small-scale built heritage.

Description of the walk

From the hiking information point at the Montignac Tourist Office, head towards Sarlat (D704). After 6 km, turn left towards Saint-Amand-de-Coly. Park at Place du 14 Juillet, where there is a car park with a picnic table and shelter.

(S/E) With your back to the car park, follow the road to the right, then turn left onto Route de l'Abbaye towards the village centre. At the entrance to the village, look for a flight of steps between two houses on the right.

(1) Take these steps , which lead up a steep path. In places, it offers views of the abbey, its ramparts and the Porte de Salignac. Numerous low walls line the path as it climbs gently up to the plateau. Walk past a large house and its old well, then continue straight ahead to reach a crossroads marked by a wooden cross.

(2) You can see, at the farm below on the left, a beautiful round tower covered in slate. Follow the signposts, leaving two paths branching off to the left, one of which leads towards Asplats. Continue to the hamlet of Castagnet.

(3) At the roadside, turn right at the large oak tree and head down into the valley to a fork in the path.

(4) Follow the signposts and head up to the left, towards Mortefond. At the road, turn right and, once in the hamlet, continue to the left, still on Route de Mortefond. Continue to the hamlet of Le Petit Bos, located just after Mortefond.

(5) On leaving the hamlet of Mortefond, turn left onto the path and continue to Clos de Veysset.

(6) Turn right into Impasse d'Asplat.

(7) At the end of Impasse des Asplats, continue right along the path until you return to Place du 14 Juillet in Coly Saint-Amand (S/E).

A lovely, easy walk around the Abbey Church of Saint Amand de Coly and through countryside dotted with dry stone walls and drystone shelters.
