Loop of the Ullat huts and the Refuge des Conques from La Preste

A very pretty circular path, well signposted and mostly shaded. Can be done in either direction. In the direction described, a lunch break can be planned at the Refuge des Conques. After the footbridge (2), the climb that follows is steady and continues through a magnificent beech forest. Water supply (7) at the edge of the forest, just before the huts. The Tech pass can be difficult, depending on the season. Then cross another beech forest, which is just as pretty. From Coll Baix (12), you can take the GRP® directly and reach the Roca Rodona fork. Shorter version of La Preste - Jasse de l'Ullat - Las Conques - Collada de la Solana

(!) Please note the GRP® detour. 25 July 2025. From(17) to (S/E). Detour (risk of falling rocks) La Preste

Description of the walk

From Le Boulou, head to Prats-de-Mollo (D115), cross it, continue to La Preste les Bains (D115a) and park in the large car park after the spa.

Oldyellow signposts

(S/E) From the car park, head towards the bottom of the valley. Follow the road as it descends. Cross the road bridge, pass below the farm (on your left above you) and continue along the road, which becomes a track closed to all motorised traffic.

(1) Leave the climb to Col de Siern on your left. Continue along the track until you reach a left-hand bend. Look for a wooden signpost on the right-hand side.

(2) Leave the track, turn right into the forest, cross a footbridge and continue along a very rough track for a few metres. Then follow a path along the edge of the stream. Turn right and climb steeply to reach a track. Yellow painted wooden post.

(3) Climb up the unmaintained grassy track on the left. (Observed at the end of June 2025). Continue along this well-marked track. Pass below Mas de la Gravodella, in a wet area.

(4) Continue up the steep climb on a grassy path (observed at the end of June 2025). You will eventually come out at Collada d'en Manuel, in an open area. Caution: change direction. Yellow painted wooden post.

(5) Turn left and climb up through the magnificent beech forest. Follow the very good path that climbs steadily. After a section of stony ground, you will come to a steel gate.

(6) Go through it and close it properly. Cross a rocky area and continue on the right path until you leave the beech forest. You will reach the spring.

Yellow painted wooden post

(7) Fresh water, to be filtered or disinfected in summer. Continue climbing along a path to the hut and Orri de l'Ullat.

(8) Go around them on the left and climb up opposite. Turn right and descend through the forest to reach the Tech, at an altitude of 1616 metres.

Recent yellow markings

(9) Cross it as best you can. Take off your shoes if necessary. A little further on, cross another small stream and turn east, climbing up a grassy path (observed at the end of June 2025). You will arrive at the edge of the forest, at Serra Mitjana. Caution: change direction. Turn left at the yellow sign.

(10) Enter the forest via a path that is steep in places. Cross a first wet area and turn right, heading east, still following the well-marked path. Pass a second wet area and climb up to reach some old pastures (no animals: observed at the end of June 2025). There is a ruined sheepfold on the right. Vast landscape.

(11) Continue along the path overgrown with grass and broom (observed at the end of June 2025). Climb again through low forest and come out onto pastureland at Col Baix, at an altitude of 1691 metres. Directional signpost. Vast landscape.

Yellow and red markings. GRP® Ronde du Canigou and GRP® Tour du Canigou

(12) You can join the Roca Rodona directly on the right via the GRP® Ronde du Canigou.
Continue opposite and descend into the beech forest (Tour du Canigou). Take care: the path is rutted with many exposed roots. Much further down, you will reach the car park and the Refuge des Conques. This is a beautiful spot to take a break, have a drink or something to eat (in summer).

Off the trail

(13) Walk along the right side of the refuge, following the wooden fence, until you reach a picnic area and a dry spring (observed at the end of June 2025). Go through the gate and descend, initially following the forest track. Then go back up the same track. Leave a track on your left and continue climbing up the track, which is now grassy, until you reach Roca Rodona. There are multiple signposts.

Yellow and red markings. GRP® Ronde du Canigou

(14) Leave the flat track that branches off to the right until you reach Col Baix. Climb up to the left, go through a wooden passage in the fence. You can take a break at this point. The landscape changes. Then descend via a steep, damaged path in the open. Take note of the markings and follow them carefully. After a steep descent, you will arrive at Collada de la Solana (small sun pass). Turn left at the yellow and red markings and two cairns in the left-hand bend. There is a rock with markings at the start of the trail. The area is overgrown with grass (observed at the end of June 2025).

(15) Take care. Altitude: 1,515 m. Turn completely left, along the mountainside, descending slightly for about 250 m. You will arrive near a wet area. There is a rock with a sign pointing left and right.

(16) Without going there, turn completely right and descend steeply to enter the forest. 250 m further on, look out for the left turn in the forest and, after 200 m, cross the Còrrec de Santa Maria, turn right and continue downhill on a good path.

(17) Leave the beech forest and continue straight ahead towards the road. Follow it along the top without crossing the fence. After a right-hand bend, enter another beech forest and descend along a good path. After 400 m, in a clearing, turn right. Follow the clear markings and continue along a good path, almost flat, for 150 m.

(18) Take care. Descend steeply to the left along a path in poor condition. Follow the clearly visible markings. Turn left, cross Còrrec de Santa Maria, climb up to the right through a chicane in the fence and continue climbing for 50 m.

(19) Take care. Climb up to the right along a path that quickly turns right, then descends past a ruined building.

(20) Cross the small footbridge over the stream and turn left to come out onto an old developed area (benches) and an old abandoned building. Keep an eye out for the signposts. Cross a flat concrete area (benches). Pick up a track, pass an area exposed to falling rocks, and join a macadam road. Follow it downhill and you will soon reach the car park ( S/E).
