Description of the walk

Start from the Place de l’Église Saint-Louvent. There is an information panel from Copary (Communauté de Communes de Revigny-sur-Ornain) showing the Éole circular path (marked with a yellow Rectangle featuring two birds in flight on a white background), which we will follow in part.

(S/E) Head east along the Grand Rue, passing in front of the town hall. After the left-hand bend, turn right onto the Voie de Loupy and carry on straight ahead to the edge of the Bois de la Ville, which you follow on your right.

(1) Leave the circular path of Éole and take a path on the right that enters the woods (not shown on the map) until the next junction (small wooden hut).

(2) Turn left and head due north up the white path.

(3) Turn right onto a straight stretch and, at the junction, left onto the white track.

(4) Turn left, heading due west, and continue straight on until the junction just before the Étang du Grand Morinval, visible between the trees.

(5) Continue to the right to cross the Bois des Battants, ignoring all the side paths.

(6) Turn left onto a track that takes you along the edge of a pasture.

(7) Turn right to follow this fenced edge until you reach a path.

(8) Leave the forest and continue left between the meadows. Follow this path for about 1.2 km, with the village of Laheycourt in sight on your right.

(9) Take a grassy path leading uphill to the left: be careful, as the marker for the path coming from the right no longer exists.

(10) Almost at the top of the climb, turn right, still on a grassy path which leads to a crossroads between two isolated farms.

(11) Turn left onto a small tarmac road, which passes between the Morinval ponds and becomes a path again. There is an educational sign from Copary.

(12) At this crossroads, follow the signposting for the Éole circular route and turn right onto the Voie Monthiers (the name comes from the monastery).

(13) Ignore the junction with the D20, which is very close by, and turn left towards Villers, which you can see in the distance. Head for the Place de l’Église (S/E).

Worth a visit

Information about the ponds and former clay pits is provided on the information board.
During the season, hunting takes place on Mondays and Fridays.
There are large numbers of common cranes during the winter, which can only be seen from a distance as they are very shy.

I got on really well with the hunting clubs, who rang me up and changed their plans! The paths had been cleared and the brambles cut back! Well done

You must stay on existing paths; at one point in the description, you’re asked to follow the fence, but this is impossible because the ground has been dug up and the path was impassable, so you either turn back or climb over the barbed wire!!!!

A lovely walk with varied scenery. I was surprised to come across a beaver bathing in a puddle
along the path at point 6 in the description.

A hike undertaken with a large group of young people. Very accessible. Do, however, watch out for the hidden path, which is obscured by trees felled during logging operations.
