Description of the walk

Park near the Salle des Fêtes or the Maison des Associations in Pommiers. A multi-storey car park is available, accessed via the Montée de la Borne.

(S/E) From the Maison des Associations, go down the stairs to the street, turn left then head down to the right via the Chemin du Déo. As you pass, note the cut in the ground and the mark of a fault line, as well as a water catchment. After 300 m, turn right onto Chemin Saint-Martin and arrive at the Saint-Martin wash house: built in 1832, it was once covered by a roof structure that has since disappeared.

(1) Turn left onto Chemin de la Cheville, opposite the wash house, and follow it for 600 m to the bottom of the valley where the junction with Route de Saint-Fond is located. Continue straight ahead on the concrete path called Chemin de la Chèvre, which climbs quite steeply.

(2) Almost at the top, at the signpost for Chalier, turn right towards “Les Granges”. Continue straight on until you reach the tarmac road. Admire the panoramic view over Pommiers and Villefranche. The road then descends. At the last house, turn right, following the yellow and red markings ofthe GRP®. You will come back down to the Galoche valley.

(3) Cross the Route de Saint-Fond with care and continue straight ahead along a path that branches off to the left into the woods. Follow it uphill to reach a tarmac road. Turn left onto it, following the yellow and red markings until you reach the “Give Way” sign. Turn right and head up the road. At the next junction, continue along the road then turn left onto the Chemin des Granges, continuing to follow the same markings.

(4) Pass the magnificent Château des Tours on the left and its private chapel on the right, continuing whilst leaving the Chemin du Cochet on your right. At the cross, go straight on, leaving the yellow and red markings on your right (return route). Cross the hamlet of Les Granges. On leaving, on the left at the entrance to a vineyard, admire the Manoir du Carry.

(5) Turn left onto the Chemin du Charpennay to cross the hamlet of Le Carry. Then turn right onto the Route du Carry and walk for about 300 m. Enjoy the beautiful view of the Château de Saint-Fond.

(6) Turn right onto Chemin de la Dîme as far as the Dîmerie boundary stone (the boundary between Pommiers and Limas), then turn left. Turn right onto Chemin du Serveau and, at the last houses, turn right onto Chemin Verdoyant, which continues along a grassy section to the cross you have already passed.

Turn left, then left again onto Chemin du Cochet to cross the picturesque hamlet of the same name. After climbing up to the left, turn right at the end of the path. At the signpost “Le Champ du Bois”, continue straight ahead towards Pommiers and pass the community gardens on the right.

(7) Walk past the Serveau wash house and climb up to the junction. Go straight up the dirt track (Chemin de Pommérieux). At the end, on the tarmac, continue along the Côteau housing estate on the left.

At the cross, turn left onto Chemin de Bethléem, then right onto Rue de l’Église. Admire the church square, which offers a magnificent panoramic view, as well as the church with its austere façade and ornate apse. Continue along Rue de l’Église, passing through the historic centre of the village. On Pommiers’ main street, turn right and head towards the Maison des Associations (S/E).

Worth a visit

A bit of history

The Pommiers area has been inhabited since prehistoric times. In the 12th century, it belonged to the Priory of Île Barbe. Thanks to its varied terrain, it is not only suitable for vine-growing but was also a region of quarries, which were in operation until the early 20th century.

The walk we suggest will allow you to enjoy some lovely views and appreciate the local heritage.

An ideal Sunday afternoon autumn route for viewing the yellowing vineyards.

A pleasant walk with a few gentle climbs and some lovely views.
I got a bit confused at the end of point 2 – don’t miss the narrow path that leads back down to the Route de Saint Fond. It’s really quite inconspicuous.
Done in winter. Be careful in summer as there is no shade.

A short walk with a bit of a climb to get you going.
However, too much tarmac = too many cars...

Special mention for the very in-depth guided tour (wash houses, manor houses, the parish hall, etc.)

If you look beyond the tarmac (which makes up 95% of the route), you can enjoy the beautiful countryside and the rich heritage... Be careful in hot weather – there’s no shade, so don’t forget your hat!
