A very pleasant countryside route along the Muance river, taking in numerous wooded paths.

Description of the walk

Parking is available in the village hall car park, at the junction of the Route de Paris (D613) and Rue de l’Église Sainte-Anne.

(S/E) From the car park, with your back to the Route de Paris (D613), take Rue de l’Église Sainte-Anne and walk past the church and the cemetery. Ignore Rue de Verdun on your right, continue along Mue de la Muance and negotiate the bend. Cross the Muance and continue to the next junction.

(1) At the fork in the road, turn right onto Rue du Marais, walk for about 200 m and go through the barrier blocking motor vehicle traffic. Walk for about 300 m until you reach a right-hand bend at a right angle; ignore the dirt track leading straight ahead and continue right onto the tarmac road until you reach a T-junction. Ignore Rue d’Ingoville on the right, turn left into Rue des Cigognes and walk 250 m to the first track on the left.

(2) Turn left heading north-north-west and follow Rue aux Loups as it winds its way uphill to Route des Pédouzes (D613).

(3) With the utmost caution, cross the D613 and the entrance to the lay-by, then take Chemin de la Bruyère opposite. Walk for about 400 m, negotiate a first bend at almost a right angle and continue to a Fork in the road. Ignore the Chemin du Gibet on the left, continue right along the Chemin de la Bruyère and walk for about 600 m until you reach a crossroads.

(4) At the crossroads, turn left towards the north onto Chemin de la Maison Justin-Jean, then continue straight on for about 700 m until you reach a tarmac road. Cross Rue de la Jaunière, take the small path opposite, which is blocked to vehicles by chains, and walk for about 700 m until you reach, on the edge of the Bois de Saint-Gilles, a right-angled left-hand bend, preceded by a ditch and a small wooden footbridge allowing you to cross it.

(5) Turn left onto Vieille Rue, walk for about 250 m, pass the wooden posts blocking the way, then turn right onto Venelle de la Broche; note that there are two parallel paths just a few metres apart. Walk for about 500 m, then turn left onto Chemin des Bruyères to walk alongside the high-voltage power lines on your right. Continue until you reach a tarmac road, turn left onto Rue de la Jaunière and walk for about 150 m.

(6) Turn right towards the west-south-west onto the path that winds along the ridge and follow it for about 1.4 km, during which you will pass, on your right, the Chemin du Puchot, the Chemin Saint-Julien and the Chemin du Val Meslier. Continue until you reach the second four-way junction and the remains of a picnic table.

(7) Turn right onto Chemin de la Côte Sainte-Catherine and follow it down for about 500 m until you reach a junction with a road.

(8) Turn left onto Chemin du Coudray, ignore Chemin du Gibet on the left, then follow the Muance on your right and the hills on your left. Walk for about 1 km until you reach the Route de Paris (D613).

(9) Turn right, head towards the village and cross the Muance. Walk for about two hundred metres until you reach a pedestrian crossing near the village hall. With the utmost caution, cross the D613 using the pedestrian crossing, then head to the village hall car park (S/E).

Worth a visit

The Church of Sainte-Anne in Moult

The building dates from the 12th century, particularly the choir. Arcisse de Caumont noted in 1850 that the choir was higher than the nave, which, in his view, lacked character. The choir of the building was listed as a historic monument on 4 October 1932.

A pleasant route through wooded countryside, well-balanced (uphill and downhill) and with very little tarmac. Worth doing again in the summer, as we encountered numerous very muddy sections during this season.

Good choice, this walk on the edge of the Pays d'Auge, even though we didn't see any storks, as mentioned on a sign near the start.
Well worth doing again, perhaps even in the opposite direction!
Just a quick note: at point 5, there are no longer any wooden posts, just the sockets left in the ground – watch your step!....
