La Roche Renard circular

This is a moderate hike on a path that crosses a magnificent Vosges forest. Between the trees towards the Col du Chantoiseau, there is a view of the Swiss Jura. Experienced hikers can take a detour from the Chantoiseau to Tremonkopf for a 360° view. The descent from Chantoiseau reveals a view of Planche des Belles Filles and Ballon d'Alsace. The end of the route crosses the pretty village of Planche le Prêtre.

Description of the walk

Park in the Château du Rosemont car park (head towards Riervesmont coming from Giromagny).

(S/E) Cross the road and take the wide path on the right, marked with a red ring, towards the Col du Chantoiseau. Start the climb. The path passes under a forest road hairpin bend and then joins this forest road further up.

(1) Continue uphill along this road.

(2) After about 1.5 km, at the intersection, follow the bend to the left, then follow the red rings to the right to reach Col du Chantoiseau.

(3)The view opens up on the right, between the trees, over the south of the Territoire de Belfort and the Swiss Jura.

Long version: see description below in "During the hike or nearby"

(4) Shelter available.

Turn left to leave the Col du Chantoiseau, following the red rectangle and yellow disc markings, uphill towards the south-west. After about 650m, turn left to reach the "Pierre Écrite".

(5) Turn back to the fork and continue left, following the red rectangle and yellow disc markings. The wide path crosses a beautiful Vosges forest. Pass Grand'Roche (801m above sea level) and continue downhill with a view opening up on the right over the Planche des Belles Filles and the Ballon d'Alsace. Arrive at the crossroads between Lepuix straight ahead and Giromagny on the left.

(6) Continue straight ahead for a few dozen metres, then turn right to reach the Ferme du Mont Jean, which is a stopover lodge.

(7) Retrace your steps.

(6) Follow the red rectangle and yellow disc markings on the right towards Mont Jean and Giromagny. After about 550 metres, you will reach the Col du Mont Jean (altitude 720 metres).

(8) Continue following the red rectangle and yellow disc markings, taking the left-hand descent towards La Planche le Prêtre. The descent is quite steep and offers views over the south of the Belfort area and the Swiss Jura. Pass an old farm and continue along the path, which gradually turns into a road.

(9) Leave the red rectangle markings and take the path on the left marked with a yellow disc. Follow these markers to Planche le Prêtre: quickly turn left onto a path that crosses the fields and then join a stony path that crosses a residential area before reaching Rue de l'École. Continue left to reach a tarmac road, which you follow to the right for about ten metres to reach the crossroads with Rue des Sources.

(10) Turn left (yellow rings) towards the Rosemont car park. After 200 metres, you will reach the crossroads with Rue de la Fontaine du Cerf.

(11) Turn right onto Rue Fontaine du Cerf and continue to the end, where it leads to a house gate. Continue straight ahead along the stone path to the left of the gate. The yellow ring markings will take you back through the forest to the Rosemont car park (S/E).

Notes

Hike on mountain paths and gravel roads: wear sturdy shoes and bring walking sticks.

A Club Vosgien chalet provides shelter at the Col du Chantoiseau.

The Lodge du Mont Jean at the end of the route is a good place to take another break.

Worth a visit

(3) Option of a return trip from the Col du Chantoiseau (steep climb for 30-40 minutes with a 180-metre elevation gain, 20-minute descent via the same route) to reach the "Gros Hêtre" at an altitude of 1,040 metres, which is the entrance to the Wissgrut moor. Turn right at the blue triangle markers to reach Tremonkopf (1,091 metres). From there, you will enjoy a magnificent 360° view of the Planche des Belles Filles, the Ballon d'Alsace, the Grand Ballon, the Alsace plain, the Swiss Jura and the Swiss Alps.

(5) La Pierre Écrite (approx. 20 mins round trip): a rock located at an altitude of 975 m with inscriptions dating from the late19th and early20th centuries. The rock was classified as a historical monument on 15 April 1911 but has since fallen into oblivion. Further information is available at www.lieux-insolites.fr/belfort/ecrite/ecrite.htm.

(7) Ferme du Mont Jean (20 to 30 minutes round trip): lodge in a valley with unobstructed views.

A magnificent walk through the forest, a very pleasant hike with no difficulty. We did it in 4½ hours without taking the detour at no. 3 and with a lunch break at the Col de Chantoiseau (we probably walked a little fast).
At number 8, the signpost is missing (fallen down...), only a nail stuck in a tree remains. Make sure you take the path that goes downhill.
At number 10, we didn't see any " anneaux jeunes " signs, but there were still " disque jeune " signs all the way to the end.

Perfect description. Lots of uphill and downhill sections. Make sure you have good shoes and walking sticks.
After the Col du Chantoiseau, I followed the red rectangle that passes by the Rocher du Serpent before reaching the Grand Hêtre. It's a beautiful viewpoint, and it allows you to avoid the first round trip.
I find the return trip to the inscribed stone uninteresting, as the vegetation blocks the view.
To finish at the lodge, I followed the Route du Quartier Mont Jean, which eventually joins point 8.
These options add about 2 km and 200 m of elevation gain.

This route is classified as moderate, although there are some nice climbs and descents. Walking poles are a good idea. The route is impeccable, with beautiful views. I was surprised to see that we ended up very close to Wissgrut. At that point, the cows were on our playground... or we were on theirs... So it was a bit scary because we had to pass between them and there were calves, so we had to watch out for horns... Otherwise, it was a very beautiful hike.

Great hike, quite steep! We did it in 5 hours with a 30-minute break. Beautiful scenery, especially on the Wissgrut ridge.

A very shaded route, making it pleasant to walk in hot weather.
Many small, very quiet paths.
Clear and accurate description, very true to reality.
The additional section to Trémontkopf is fairly easy and offers superb views.
