The Reigne trail with return via the Voie Verte

The name of the village comes from “Magny”, meaning a rural house, and “Vernois”, a place planted with alders. Originally, Le Magny-Vernois was just a farm belonging to Lure Abbey!

Since then, the fitness trail, the Sentier de la Reigne (5 km), takes you past the mill and into the woodland to admire the river. On this shaded path, the water’s magnificent colour, the tranquillity, and the lush flora and fauna offer a wonderful change of scenery.

To return to Magny-Vernois, the path follows part of the Voie Verte.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park at the entrance to the Vita trail, Route de la Brosse.

(S/E) Cross the road. Take a short detour to the wash house directly opposite; do not cross the bridge but take the wooden path on the left which passes in front of the old mill and follow it to the Reigne spring.

(1) Continue along the path, keeping to the right and ignoring the paths branching off to the left. You will reach a junction with a wide dirt track.

(2) Carry straight on and keep heading in the same direction.

(3) At this point, keep to your right, cross the bridge over the Ruisseau du Picot and then continue straight on along the same path until you reach the edge of the railway line. Turn right and walk alongside the track, following the path below which is completely safe, until you reach the end of the Voie Verte.

(4) Turn right onto the Voie Verte.

(5) At the first exit, turn right to leave it and rejoin the tarmac road. Follow Rue du Moulin, with views of the dam and the mill, then Quai de la Reigne to the end.

(6) Turn right onto the bridge crossing the Reigne: views of the leisure area on the left and the wash house and mill on the right, with numerous swans present all year round.

At the roundabout, turn right to return to the car park (S/E).

Notes

Hike also done by Laloutes.

Circular walk, hiking boots recommended, be careful as the ground can be slippery at times, especially on the wooden bridges.

No refreshment points along the route.

Worth a visit

During the walk.
The Reigne, with its many swans and its resurgence, the wash house and the mill at Magny-Vernois.

For the record, the River Reigne rises in Lure (70) and is fed by several resurgences of the Ognon; its main source is the Lac de la Font, situated in the centre of the town opposite the old prison. It joins the Ruisseau Notre-Dame, into which the effluent from the treatment plant flows, and then crosses the village of Magny-Vernois, where it already has a substantial flow, resulting from the inflow of other streams upstream and an additional resurgence.
It flows for just a few kilometres before joining the Ognon.

Nearby towns: Lure, Villersexel.

Bakery in Magny-Vernois.

A beautiful walk that is very easy to do and very well signposted. A wide path, half of which is in the woods and alongside a stream. Really very nice.

Very well signposted and very popular. The section along the riverbank is stunning; the return along the greenway is a bit monotonous, of course, but it makes for a nice circular loop 🙂

I loved this walk; the area is absolutely beautiful. At the start, there were lots of swans, and along the way, by the Reigne, I saw a kingfisher, a dipper, and what I think was a moorhen. I’ll post some photos of this walk. One slight downside: the return journey along the greenway is long and monotonous. If I were to do it again, I’d turn back at the bridge crossing the stream so I could admire the beautiful colours of the little river once more. In any case, thanks to the author for sharing this.

A pleasant, flat walk, best done in dry weather. I’d recommend doing it in reverse: the sections along the cycle path and the old railway line can be a bit monotonous, but the part through the woods is absolutely lovely, and the village and the banks of the Reigne are very pretty.
