Circular route from La Citerne, starting from Saint-Zacharie

A pleasant walk, starting along the banks of the Huveaune from Saint-Zacharie, with a few local sights, followed by a climb up to the Citerne hill with a beautiful view of Nans-les-Pins, its old village and Sainte Baume.

Description of the walk

The route starts from the car park at the end of Rue des Mallonniers in Saint-Zacharie.

(S/E) Follow Boulevard des Fours eastwards (you’ll soon understand why it’s called that), and at the end turn right towards Huveaune.

(1) Cross the small bridge, then, at the end of the road, turn left onto Avenue Jean Moulin. Follow it to the end. It continues into the forest along a path; carry on for about 200 m until you reach the start of a path leading to the left.

(2) Follow this path down and start walking alongside the riverbed. Stay as close as possible to the Huveaune. When the river begins a wide bend to the right, you’ll come to an old Roman bridge and some beautiful, ancient sluice gates. See Practical Information.

(3) Continue along the river and note an industrial estate on the other side. Turn left to reach the Route de la Sambuc.

(4) Cross with care and follow the track opposite (east). Head uphill and enjoy some views of the Sainte Baume massif to the south. After about 300 m, the track is joined by another coming from the left. After another 300 m, a path branches off to the left.

(5) Ignore this path (it is the return route) and continue along the track to the right. Stay on this track through the forest until you reach a junction just before a right-hand bend.

(6) Ignore the path heading north and head down to the right towards the south, passing the ruins of an old sheepfold; then, at the bottom of the track, turn left. After a hairpin bend to the left followed by a bend to the right, you’ll reach another bend to the right.

(7) At this bend, take the path opposite which follows the course of a stream. It is a long, gently sloping climb heading roughly north, leading onto theGR®9A.

(8) Once on theGR®, turn right and follow the path for about 500 m.

(9) Leave theGR® and turn right, then right again to reach a hillock with a fire station, from where you can enjoy a fine view of Les 2 Nans. Continue to the summit of La Citerne, then turn back.
Return to theGR®9and turn left to reach the previous junction.

(8) Continue straight ahead on theGR® for a good fifty metres and turn left. Follow this path down towards the south-west. Ignore the first turn-off to the right. The path turns 90° to the right and comes to a fork.

(10) At this fork, take the left-hand path; after about 200 m, turn left heading due south. The path gradually turns south-west and, after a left-hand bend, reaches a junction.

(11) Turn right and keep to the left. Continue straight ahead, ignoring the paths to the right or left until you reach a T-junction.

(12) Turn right and rejoin the outbound track at the junction of the circular track.

(5) Return to the starting point, passing the Roman ruins again, then along Avenue Jean-Moulin and Boulevard des Fours to the Malloniers car park

(S/E). See Practical Information.

Notes

A walk organised by AMFRA Marseille. Thanks to Bernadette and Josette for this lovely walk.

(3) The old sluice gates were used to regulate the waters of the Huveaune, and the old little bridge may have been a Roman aqueduct, as Roman settlers occupied the valley before the9thcentury.

(S/E) Before heading back, you can linger in front of the old pottery kilns, as ‘Saint-Zach’ was, until 1981, a major centre for terracotta work thanks to the presence of high-quality clay in the soil of the commune.

The Fairy of the Spring, Marie, 2013
According to legend, Mary Magdalene, having left the Holy Land, is said to have found refuge
in the Sainte-Baume Massif to lead a hermit’s life and do penance.
Her endless tears, flowing in torrents, gave rise to the Huveaune.
Lucy + Jorge Orta drew inspiration from this to create the Fairy of the Spring. Alone in the middle
the woods, kneeling over the river, she offers us water as a gift. In the
water cycle, she represents the stage of gushing forth, when the water contained within
the earth emerges to the surface and becomes a spring. She symbolises giving and sharing.

A pleasant short walk; a bit tricky in the second half due to a moderately steep and very stony descent. It would no doubt be difficult in wet weather.

A pleasant and varied walk; the trail starting from Zacharie is well worth doing as it follows the Huveaune. It’s a wide path with no real difficulty, though there is one section towards the end of the walk on a rocky, downhill path where you need to be careful. Beautiful views on the way up. Well shaded.
The GPS route is straightforward, but you need to stay alert as there are an impressive number of paths leading off in all directions.

A lovely walk
However, the directions at the end of the route aren’t clear, so we couldn’t complete the circular route...
What a shame.

A lovely walk with stunning views of the hills above La Citerne. It takes you through the woods and along some lovely little paths. Very few tracks. We really enjoyed this walk.

This is the first time I’ve used Visorando for a route I wasn’t familiar with. The instructions that come with the map – and the map itself – are spot on. Our group really enjoyed it. However, we set off from La Foux rather than from the centre of St Zacharie to shorten the walk to 10 km with 350 m of elevation gain.

A brilliant walk, with stunning views once you reach the plateau where the hunting lodge is located. I headed back down via the GR route that goes through La Gantesse – it’s a bit longer but the path is wider. The directions provided seem a bit vague, but you can follow the trail easily all the way, so no problems there. – thanks for sharing

A pleasant walk with some lovely views and beautiful woodland. Easy, apart from the approach to WP5 on the way back, which is very steep with loose stones. We had a bit of trouble following the directions too, but we made it in the end!

A few hiccups with the route description, but it’s fairly straightforward and there’s mobile coverage. We worked up quite a sweat climbing up the stream valley, but were rewarded with a breath of fresh air at the summit and a magnificent view
