Description of the walk

Park in the town hall car park, Place du 11 Novembre 1018.

(S/E) With your back to the town hall, follow Avenue du 8 Mai 1945 southwards, pass the Caisse d’Épargne and, at the corner of the Maison de la Presse, turn left.
Cross the pedestrian crossing on Rue Emmanuel Roy and turn left. At the bakery, turn right.

(1) At the cross, take the road on the right, passing in front of the cemetery. Inside the cemetery, there is a very curious cross dating from the 17th century. You will come to a signpost/dead-end sign,

(2) Turn left towards the hamlet of L'Évangile. At the stop sign (beware of the D19, take care), cross the road and continue straight ahead (no entry for cars). At the next junction, turn left onto Chemin de la Tannerie. You will reach house number 61.

(3) After house number 61, turn right onto the stony path and head up towards the hillside. At the bend, continue straight on along the dirt track. Cross the woods then turn left to follow the meadow and vineyard on the left (heading north-east). The path veers left and joins a tarmac road. At the road, turn left. At the second marker, before Lagut, turn left to enter the woods. Watch out for the slope. When you reach the road, turn left then take the first road on the right uphill. As you climb, there is a covered fountain on the right.

(4) At the cross, head left onto the small path between the houses. At the shed, go downhill for about twenty metres. Continue downhill to the Branne Town Hall’s plant room. At the tarmac road, take the road on the right (Rue de Lillot) to arrive opposite the Tourist Office. Cross the road and head towards the river.

(5) Follow the Quais du Dr Antoine along the Dordogne. At the end of the quays, take Rue Matteau to head back up towards the Halle. At the end of the street, turn right, then right again to take Rue du Port Leyron.
At the Barraud vineyard, cross the bridge. Once on the road, head up the hill towards the village.

(6) At the car park, turn right. On leaving the village, take the dirt track that climbs to the left into the woods. Magnificent view over the Dordogne.
Walk past the pidgeon hunting hut until you reach the vineyards. Continue to the corner of the first plot.

(7) Turn left between the metal pylon and the EDF pole to enter the woods. Follow the path to the road. When you reach the tarmac road, turn left. Return to the junction you passed on the way out, near the car park.

(6) Turn right, go past the junction and follow Rue Port Leyron. At the end of the street, turn right to return to the town hall car park (S/E).

Worth a visit

Cemetery: this 17th-century cross, listed as a historic monument on 18 July 1973, consists of a twisted, fluted shaft and a Corinthian-style capital (acanthus leaves) supporting a very simple cross.

The Church of Saint-Étienne, in the Neo-Gothic style, built on the initiative of Father Lapeyre: its construction spanned the years 1859 to 1878. Visitors can admire two spires rising 42.5 metres above ground level, as well as gargoyles.
The interior consists of a nave with four bays covered by vaults and two aisles; of particular note are the two superimposed altars and the stained-glass windows by the master glassmaker Villiet.

A lovely walk, especially through the woodland. Beautiful views over the Dordogne.
A small comment, however:
Between points 3 and 4
The description is a bit confusing.
It should have specified: ‘At the edge of the woods, turn left onto the road. Before Lagut, take the path on the left which goes downhill and joins a tarmac road.’ The rest is fine.
Otherwise, a very lovely walk.

At number 4, you really feel as though you’re walking through someone’s property and you start to doubt the directions: but that’s exactly right, so put your fears aside and hurry on quietly so as not to disturb anyone!
WARNING: Description no. 6 is ambiguous. “Turn left between the metal pylon and the electricity pole” implies turning AFTER the pylon, which leads nowhere!

It should have said the opposite, i.e.: “Turn left between the EDF pole and the metal pylon”, or even more simply: “Turn left at the foot of the metal pylon, BEFORE it”.

Otherwise, a very lovely walk, despite the killer false flats! The beauty of the woodland makes you forget the challenging slopes!

A pleasant walk through villages, vineyards and shady spots. The route is quiet and therefore a pleasure to follow.

A lovely walk, especially through the woodland. It’s a shame we couldn’t follow the marked route due to a lack of details or the absence of signposts (crosses).

This circular route is part of a hike that started in Genissac.
It’s a shame that the trees block our view of the Dordogne above Guignan, but the sections through the woodland are magnificent and the short, challenging climbs add variety to this part of the route, with the icing on the cake being the port of Branne – a haven of peace and tranquillity...
The views of the Dordogne are magnificent.
Thank you for introducing us to this corner of the Gironde
