The Gabariers Circular Walk in Cabara

The Cabara circular walk offers beautiful views, particularly of the meandering Dordogne.
The Port of Cabara, with its old warehouses, serves as a reminder that the village was centred on river trade in the 19th century. Its port was very busy. As a testament to those prosperous times, the houses and shops of the many craftsmen and fishermen still stand on the riverbank.

Description of the walk

The circular route starts at Port de Cabara (small car park).

(S/E) With your back to the Dordogne, turn right towards Branne. Turn left into the first street, Rue de la Mairie, then right into Rue Despagne.

(1) At the end of the street, turn left and immediately right into Rue Picoterie. Turn right (signpost) and join the road leading towards Branne. Turn left and stay on the road as it bends left, continuing southwards.

(2) About 100m before the Stop sign, just as the road makes an almost right-angle bend, take the grassy path opposite that leads into the woods. Cross the D18 and take the small tarmac road at the Stop sign.

(3) Turn left when you reach the plateau, then right at the first road. Drive through the hamlet of Limouzin and turn left after the cemetery.

(4) At the three-way junction, turn right and pass the “Cabara” sign. At the stop sign, cross the main road to take the road opposite. Head down into the village, enjoying a beautiful view of the meandering Dordogne.

(5) At the second bend, go straight on down a grassy path and enter the woods. Go through the small wooden gate and arrive in the village. Follow the small street straight on and head down to the left towards the harbour (S/E).

Worth a visit

You can admire the Church of Notre-Dame de Cabara, which was built in 1880 on the site of the Romanesque church. This reconstruction was driven by Cardinal Donnet, to whom we owe many neo-Gothic bell towers.

In the cemetery stands a 16th-century cross. On a base comprising four steps rises a column divided into two parts by a ring. Above this, the shaft is fluted. On the cross, a crucifix is depicted on the west side and the Virgin Mary on the east. Two other angels, placed on the arms of the cross, flank the Virgin. With one hand they hold her veil, and with the other, they place a crown upon her head.

Hello and thank you for your emails, which I use often. I did the Sadirac-Madirac randogps33-1137 route (which does not come directly from Visorando) and there are several sections that turn out to be private, so it is essential to go around them.
Thanks again.

A lovely circular loop (if you ignore the path after point 2, which apparently serves as a public toilet – what a shame!)
We enjoyed the scenery and the houses...

At this time of year, the section outside the village offers little of interest apart from the chance to get a breath of fresh air whilst walking across the plateau. The walk description states: "beautiful views, particularly of the meandering Dordogne". In fact, you can only see part of a single bend – the one that runs alongside the harbour and the village.

A very pleasant and easy walk.
We got a bit lost because we couldn’t find the signpost at No. 3 (after the house).

For our first hike, we really enjoyed it.
Beautiful setting (through woods, vineyards and a village, plus a panoramic viewpoint). It was a good thing we’d downloaded the route map, as there are no signposts on the ground.

Hello,

Thank you for your feedback.

Regarding point no. 5. It is offset by approximately 70 metres to the south-east. It is therefore accessed from the outside of the bend rather than from the end of the bend.

Indeed, this is clearly visible on the OSM map.
It has been corrected, thank you.

See you soon

A pleasant walk. There’s just one error in the route on the map, at point no. 5. It’s off by about 70 metres to the south-east. You therefore reach it from the outside of the bend, not from the end of the bend. Signposting is in place. Thank you!!
