Circular loop from Gilette to Pont de la Cerise starting from La Clave

A very beautiful walk, which can be started either from La Clave (Le Broc) or from Gilette.
It passes through varied landscapes and offers a chance to explore the Pre-Alps... whilst passing very close to the Estéron
We have chosen to start this route with the climb to Gilette from La Clave to avoid this difficulty at the end of the hike.
You’ll easily be able to reach the river on three occasions throughout this hike.

Description of the walk

Park along the Estéron, on the Route des Iscles near the private road leading to La Clave (parking spaces available along the road leading to the village of Le Broc).

(S/E) Take the Route de la Clave, which is closed by a barrier on your right. Follow the Estéron for about 2 km

(1) At marker No. 21, take the suspension bridge and follow the path towards Gilette, which passes through and alongside various properties.

(2) Turn left (ignore the path leading over the bridge ahead of you).
You will then cross a recently renovated bridge spanning a small stream. Follow the yellow markings.
The fairly steep climb follows a path, initially paved, which you must continue to follow. Then continue through the woodland to emerge near the school in Gilette. Ignore the path leading off to the Chapelle Saint-Honoré on your right.

(3) At marker No. 4, you’ll arrive in Gilette near the school. Take the road on your left (marked with a no entry sign).

(4) Shortly after this, a small path branches off to the right on the left-hand side of the road, near a house.

(5) Pass near Blaise No. 13 and head towards Colle Belle.

(6) At the next junction, keep heading towards Colle Belle, on your left.

(7) At Colle Belle, join the M17 road and follow it to your left for a few hundred metres. Please note: this is a fairly busy road.

(8) Leave the road via the DFCI track on your left, heading towards Pont de la Cerise. The path is fairly wide and reaches the riverbed in about 10–15 minutes.
(Swimming is restricted here, but many bathers enjoy the cool water during the summer months).

(9) After your break, cross the stone Pont de la Cerise bridge and continue your walk along a path that winds away from the river. Pass marker No. 101 and continue to the left.

(10) Marker No. 102: take the path on your left, towards Notre-Dame du Brec.

(11) At marker No. 103, you can take a short detour to walk down to the banks of the Estéron.

(12) Return to the fork.

(11) Continue left, descending gently towards La Clave. Pass further down, past some beautiful and rather impressive ruins.

(13) Pass marker No. 104.

(14) At marker No. 20, leave the path and turn left, heading due north, onto a relatively straight track bordered by farmland, towards La Clave.

(15) Go round the old mill and cross the small stream to find a path on the left.

(16) At the junction, take the relatively flat path on the right. Continue straight on and go downhill to rejoin the path you took on the way there.

(1) Continue to the right along the Route de la Clave (tarmac road) to the car park (S/E).

Notes

No water along the route (except if you head back up to the village of Gilette) (3).
Option to start the route in Gilette: the walk then begins at (3).
The walk is quite exposed to the sun, but the nearby stream offers opportunities to cool off at several points.

Stunning, varied scenery and plenty of places to swim along the river: absolutely brilliant

It’s true there’s a local ban on a small section, but we still took the path without any problems.

We followed this route (with a few changes), travelling in the opposite direction to the one described.
We parked along the Esteron and walked up towards Clos Martel, then headed towards La Chapelle Sainte-Marguerite to reach Fougassière, where we joined the route. Following the route in reverse to that described, we arrived at the Pont de la Cerise (magnificent)
The only drawbacks: the path leading to Gilette from Colle Belle is closed by municipal order, so we had to take the road to Gilette (lots of cars, which wasn’t great)
Another ban by municipal order: the path leading from Gilette to the Clave footbridge. We took this path at our own risk and found only a few remnants of an old storm.
A very beautiful hike, somewhat spoiled by these restrictions, which are likely to remain in place for some time.
Gilette is a very pretty hilltop village with a magnificent view over the Gorges de l’Esteron.
23 km and 840 m of elevation gain completed in 5 hours 30 minutes (including numerous photo stops and snack breaks)

The section leading up from the La Clave footbridge to Gilette via the Chemin des Fuonts is in dire need of a clear-out.
The section from Gilette to the Pont de la Cerise is in very good condition, as is the section from the Pont de la Cerise to the La Clave footbridge.
