Circular Fenils starting from Césane

A particularly pleasant circular route above the Doria Riparia valley, which links Césane to Oulx and joins the main route leading to Turin and the Fréjus Tunnel. From Fenils, there’s a lovely view of the ski slopes at Sestrières.

Description of the walk

Park in the large car park next to the disused barracks at Césanne.

(S/E) Immediately take the ‘Sentiero Balcone’ path (signposted as such) and follow it, using the mixed red-and-white stripes and Red Disc markings. Stay on this path until you reach the crossroads of paths in the forest.

(1) Turn right, leaving the Balcony Trail behind. Cross the Rio Aigliere, follow the course of the Rio Arpentin to reach the left bank of the Doria Riparia. Join the wide track leading to Fenils.

(2) Join this track and follow it to the village of Fenils.

(3) At this junction, rejoin the Sentiero Balcone and turn right onto it. Walk through the village and, at the end of the street, turn left onto the path. Here, begin a steep climb to reach the first pass, the Col Gris.

(4) Continue along this path until you reach the second pass, the Col Rouge (Rosso). From here, begin a long, gentle descent to reach the hamlet of Pra Claud.

(5) Join the old military road leading to Mont Chaberton, marked on the map as ‘Strada militare di Val Morino’. Take it on the right after a 180° bend. Stay on this road, alternating between the paths that cut across it. You will reach the western entrance to the village of Fenils.

(6) Stay on the road and head to a new crossroads at the eastern entrance to Fenils.

(7) Take the balcony path on the right, cross the Rio Fenils via the wide footbridge and continue following the red and white markings of the balcony path. Stay on this path to return to the original junction.

(1) Follow the outward route back to the starting car park (S/E).

Very busy route : No

The start of the hike is marred by the roar of motorbikes from our Italian friends, who love to rev their engines loudly as they race through the mountains (in summer, the Turin–Montgenèvre road below is very busy).
On leaving Fenlis, as you climb, make sure you stay on the stony path that winds its way up and don’t veer off to the sides until you reach the forest track further up.
Stunning views of Chaberton!
