Bus-Saint-Rémy and Montreuil-sur-Epte circular loop

A walk rich in heritage, on the border between Normandy and the French Vexin. The route alternates between fields, woods and hills, hopping over the River Epte. This lovely circular route ends with a visit to the former Notre-Dame-du-Trésor Abbey (now private, used for receptions).

Description of the walk

Parking is available for a maximum of two cars on Rue de la Reine Blanche, below the Manoir de Bus; otherwise, use Rue Valcorbon.

(S/E) With your back to the cemetery and the manor house, turn right. Go up the hill, ignoring a turn-off to the left, until you reach a T-junction opposite No. 21 Rue Valcorbon.

(1) Turn right and take the first left, Rue de la Mairie. At the end of the street, continue along the stony path and, at the T-junction, take the path on the left. Join the road, turn right and, at the fork in the road immediately ahead, leave the road on the right and take the one on the left for about 240 m until you reach the first path on the left, Route d’Écos.

(2) Turn left, join the road, Rue des Prés Hauts, in the hamlet of La Villeneuve, and turn right onto it until the next T-junction.

(3) Turn left onto Rue du Coq Sauvage and continue to the hamlet of Baudemont. Take the first left, Rue des Petits Parcs, to reach the Source Saint-Martin.

(4) Retrace your steps, turn left and go down the hill along Route de la Pierre Tournante until you reach the junction at the bottom of the slope. Turn left into the village of Brey-et-Lû, and continue to the first turning on the right opposite the Résidence du Manoir.

(5) Turn right onto Grande Rue, pass in front of Notre-Dame Church and cross the bridge over the Epte. Ignore the no-entry road and turn right until you reach the roundabout. Go straight across it, continue straight ahead (D142), with the post office on your left and the school on your right, and head for the junction at the village exit.

(6) Turn left onto Route de la Croix Santé (D37), Résidence des Deux Étangs. Pass the Saint-Louis farm on your left and continue to the junction. Turn left then right and carry on straight ahead towards Pont-Rû until the first left-hand bend after the Moulin de Pont-Rû.

(7) Leave the road and take the grassy path directly opposite, which becomes stony and then grassy again, until you reach the top crossroads X after the undergrowth.

(8) Turn right then left, and continue straight ahead along the straight grassy path; a few metres further on, on the left, is La Cabane du Clos, where I had a picnic, taking care of my equipment and leaving the place clean. Continue to the road, the first T-junction, and turn left until the first turn-off on the right.

(9) Turn right onto the grassy path, continue to the road, thesecond T-junction, and turn right for a few metres.

(10) Take the path on the left and continue straight on until you reach the road atthe third T-junction.

(11) Turn left and go down the road to the Stop sign.

(12) Turn right onto Rue des Plantes, towards Buhy. Go up the hill; halfway up, turn left (west), facing No. 5, and follow the grassy path directly opposite. After a while, the path veers left (south) and descends to the Church of Saint-Denis in Montreuil-sur-Epte. Continue to the main road.

(13) With your back to the church, continue straight ahead along Rue Saint-Denis (D37) and carry on to the hamlet of Copierres and a small square.

(14) Turn right onto Chemin du Rustillon. Take the first left and follow the path to the road, Route de Champsmesnil. Turn right onto this road, pass the British Soldiers’ Memorial on your left and continue to the T-junction opposite Aveny Castle. Turn right onto the D146, pass the crossroads, go round Notre-Dame Church and return to the crossroads.

(15) Turn right onto Rue Pavée (D119) and pass the Château d’Aveny on your left. Turn left onto the first road, Chemin de la Procession. Continue straight on along the path through the fields and reach the edge of a wood at the first house with the farm.

(16) Continue left and immediately take the first left, Chemin des Remises du Pont, until you reach the road opposite the former Notre-Dame-du-Trésor Abbey. Take the D4 on the right and turn left at the first road until you reach the crossroads at the foot of the water tower. Cross over and follow Rue Valcorbon opposite, returning to the original junction.

(1) Turn right onto Rue de la Reine Blanche and return to the starting point (S/E).

Notes

At (4), on the day I visited, the Source Saint-Martin had no water flowing from it, and apparently hadn’t for some time.

Between (8) and (9) lies the Clos hut with a lean-to. Under the lean-to are chairs and a table, and the bungalow door is not locked. I settled down there for a picnic; there are two small bins for disposing of rubbish. I think this spot must have been created by hikers, for hikers. All you need to do is leave the place in good condition and respect the site.

The former Notre-Dame du Trésor Abbey is privately owned (used for receptions) and is not open to the public.

We really enjoyed this walk: as it’s often at a high altitude, you can admire the scenery. We did it when the rapeseed and hawthorns were in bloom, which made for some wonderful colours and scents.
We found the shelter on the route after point 8. Handy if it rains!
There’s quite a bit of road walking, but it’s not too much of a bother. I think you could take a shortcut via Bray and Lu to avoid walking along the main road. Worth checking out.

A lovely walk, though it’s a shame there’s so much tarmac to follow, particularly in Bray and Lu…
