Description of the walk

Access: Take the Col d’Ibardin road. On reaching the pass, head towards Bera; after the first right-hand bend, take the small road branching off to the left. It winds through the forest and then passes the Okalarre restaurant, where the car park is on the right-hand side of the road.

(S/E) Continue along the road towards the north-east for about ten metres; at the first junction, take the path on the left. Follow the edge of a wood and then a meadow, make a detour and pass close to the Eltzaurdia benta. Continue on to reach the French-Spanish border at a fenced-in field where there is also a sheepfold. Here you will find boundary marker 17.

(1) Turn left along the enclosed field to boundary marker 16, then take a path down to the right and quickly join theGR®10.

(2) Continue downhill on theGR®10to reach the Col des Abeilles.

(3) Turn right onto a variant ofthe GR®10, continuing downhill into the valley until you reach the source of the Intzolako Erreka (the Intzola Stream in Basque).

(4) Start climbing to the right onthe GR®10along the hillside. You will reach the French-Spanish border again, marked by boundary stone 18.

(5) Continue the climb and pass in front of the Benta Intzola before reaching the Benta Zahar.

(6) Leave theGR®10, which heads off to the left, and continue straight ahead. Follow the Sagasti Erreka stream and arrive at a crossroads at the hamlet of Basasagar.

(7) Turn 90° to the right, follow the northern slopes of Txarrantxarri and arrive at a wide pass with pidgeon hunting huts.

(8) Take the path on the right that runs alongside the pidgeon hunting huts. At the three-way junction, keep to the right to easily reach the car park (S/E).

A great walk for a hot day: 90% in the shade and 40% along the stream.

This route has a lot of undergrowth, which is pleasant on sunny days but should be avoided in overcast weather, when the environment becomes dark.
Also avoid this route the day after rain, as there are numerous fords that can become problematic.

A very varied route offering stunning views of La Rhune and the Basque and Landes coasts in the first section, followed by stretches through woodland alongside streams, passing by the Inzola and Zahar springs on a very old paved path (a Roman road?).
One slight drawback is the ford crossing the Inzola stream after point no. 6 at a place called Sagasti; it is not easy to spot (perhaps due to overgrown vegetation?) and is relatively deep because the stream has a fairly strong current.
We have just re-done this hike by taking a path that climbs to the right up the side of Mount Erentzazu and leads to point no. 8; it is well-marked and presents no difficulty.

A lovely circular route we did on Sunday morning. We only came across a few mountain bikers and quite a few pottoks.
We were disappointed not to have been able to eat at Venta Intzola: next time I’ll book in advance!
