A superb panoramic hike offering views of the Aletsch Glacier to the north and, to the south, of numerous peaks over 4,000 metres, including the Matterhorn, the Weisshorn and the Monte Rosa massif.

Description of the walk

The start and finish of this hike are at the Betten – Bettmeralp – Bergstation cable car station.

(S/E) From the Bettmeralp top station, follow the main road (Hauptstrasse) north-eastwards to the junction with Seestrasse.

(1) Take Seestrasse to the Bettmerhorn cable car station.

(2) Follow the purple markers up towards Bettmersee.

(3) At the lake, head south-west, staying on the snowshoe trail, which is always marked by purple posts. Continue to a junction just before the Scheene Bodu reservoir.

(4) Turn right and continue the ascent to the Chüestall mountain restaurant.

(5) Cross a ski run and continue climbing until you reach a fork.

(6) Take the path on the right (longer, but less steep than the one on the left). Climb a final slope to reach the Moosfluh-Riederfurka ridge path.

(7) Turn left towards Hohfluh (top station of the Rideralp chairlift). On this magnificent ridge (Härdernagrat), enjoy the various views of the Aletsch Glacier.

(8) Enjoy the view of the Aletsch Glacier one last time. Begin the descent towards Riederfurka. Note the magnificent Villa Cassel as you pass.

(9) Descend to the village of Riederalp, carefully crossing several ski runs. Arrive at Riederalp West station.

(10) Heading east, follow the Aletschpromenade to the Bettmeralp upper station. (A/D)

  • The winter route does not necessarily correspond to the summer path. Winter paths are marked out alongside the ski runs. Cross the ski runs with caution at the clearly signposted junctions.
