Circular route around Mont de Rème

A walk around Mont de Rème, which enjoys a ‘mountainous’ setting near the cliffs of Nolay and Mont Rome. The walk is gentle, with just two short climbs above the villages of Créot and Marcheseuil.

Description of the walk

Park near the old wash house in Épertully.

(S/E) Head south following theGR®137and you will soon come to a wider path. Ignore this path and continue straight on to stay on theGR® and reach the first houses of Viécourt further on. Follow the roughly tarmac-surfaced path as it continues until you quickly reach a crossroad.

(1) Take the road on the left to cross the village and you will soon reach another junction. Leave the road that turns right and take the path furthest to the left as it continues. A little further on, ignore a path that heads left towards Mont de Rème. Stay on the path which immediately veers left and continue until you come to a cross-road. Turn right towards the west and you will soon reach the D136.

(2) Cross the road and keep heading in the same direction, staying on the path which will cross the °°GR®° 137 and then the D145 at an oratory.

(3) Cross the D145 and continue along the path, still heading west. Ignore the paths to the left and right before reaching another road. Ignore this road too and continue along the path. Soon, pass the driveway to the Château de Saint-Gervais on your left and, a little further on, reach another junction with a view of the high-voltage power line.

(4) Turn left and, as you round the bend, you will reach the ruins of Niez. The path turns right after the ruins to join the D145. Take this road to the left before keeping right at the entrance to the village and reaching the beautiful church of Saint-Gervais-sur-Couches, shaded by lime trees on the street side.

(5) Stay on the road and continue straight on at the next junction by an iron cross. Pass the school and reach a fork in the road by a stone cross. Leave the D145 by keeping to the right along the verge and join the C6 towards Mazenay.

Follow this small road* for about 600 m until you reach the GR®137on the left after two hairpin bends.

N.B. It is possible to avoid this tarmac section: after 100 m on the C6, at the ‘end of village’ sign, turn left onto a grassy path to rejoin the GR® further down (altitude 437) and reach point 6 on the right. Please note, this path is partly poorly maintained and requires you to cross the adjacent meadow to avoid the brambles!

(6) Take theGR® to the left and leave it immediately at the bend to follow another path further along which descends and joins the D1 further on near the houses at Parnay.

(7) Turn left and follow this busy main road with care before taking the first path on the right alongside a low stone wall. Keep left immediately and continue straight on until you reach another road a little further on. Turn left then immediately right towards Créot. Stay on this narrow street and head for the Town Hall Square.

(8) Turn left and follow the small street out of the village. Turn right shortly after a bridge and you’ll soon rejoin the D1 a little further up.

(9) Cross carefully and take the path opposite between two properties to reach a fork in the road on the climb. Head left and continue up through the vineyards until you reach the copse you could see from below.

(10) Turn right just before the copse and stay on this path, which descends quickly and joins a small road a little further on. Turn left and continue straight on along Rue du Pré Blanc. Pass through the hamlet of Marcheseuil and reach a crossroads near the old wash house.

(11) Turn left onto Rue de Rème, which climbs for about 300 m before beginning a right-hand bend. Follow the path as it continues straight on, ignoring the steep path on the left leading to the Sommet de Rème. Cross a wooded area and continue downhill until you come to a narrower path on the right

(12) Turn right*, almost going against the flow of traffic, onto this grassy, poorly maintained path to quickly reach another track. Turn left and you will find the car park a little further down (S/E).

  • Note that if you miss this junction, you will reach theGR® and simply need to turn right to rejoin the (S/E).

Start on the small street opposite the town hall; follow the sign for the wash house, which is about 100 metres further down

We did this walk around Mont Rème in glorious weather. It’s a varied route through woods, small villages and vineyards, with stunning panoramic views, including a beautiful vista of the Bout du Monde cliff. We spotted the first flowers, blossoming trees and buds ready to burst open… There weren’t many people out on this spring day…
Thanks to the author of the description; it’s perfect and precise. You simply can’t go wrong. :

The instructions were very clear and precise (including the picnic spot in St Gervais sur Couches). Just a quick note about the starting point: the Epertully wash house is located at the bottom of the village, after a short descent of about a hundred metres. Beautiful views of the Burgundian villages and the surrounding hills. We enjoyed the autumn colours in the vineyards on the southern side of Mont de Rème. I recommend this walk.

A lovely, fairly easy walk
A bit of a mix-up at point 10 – we must not have taken the right path through the woods... but with the GPS, everything sorted itself out...
The little church of Saint Gervais is well worth a look
We recommend this lovely walk
