The Chemin des Romains starting from Saint-Sernin-du-Plain

Steep-sided valleys dominated by Mont de Rome to the north and the Couchois Plateau to the south.
The landscape is by no means flat, but the climbs, which are never very long, should not deter the leisurely walker with an afternoon to spare.

Description of the walk

Park near the bus shelter at Cromey le Haut.

(S/E) Walk down the road, against the flow of traffic, to the left of the bus shelter and turn left after 250m to reach the village of Cromey le Bas at the bottom of the descent. Turn right then immediately left onto a path running along the edge of a property. Follow this steep path as it winds through the forest and joins the D225.

(1) Turn left and after 200m, take a slightly uphill path on the right until you reach a fork.
Leave the small road that turns left towards the hamlet and continue straight on along a dirt track until you soon reach a T-junction.

Turn left and then immediately right. Continue until, after about 500m, you reach another three-way junction.

(2) Turn right, then immediately left at the fork and stay on this path, which will soon head due south to reach the village of Dracy at a four-way junction. Turn right onto the avenue lined with plane trees and follow it past the château to the junction leading to it.

(3) Turn left, then right at the next junction. Leave the road quickly to take a path on the left and reach a fork in the forest at the end of a steep climb. Keep left until you come to the Roman Road.

(4) Turn left and stay on the Roman Road until you reach the crossroads with a wayside shrine.

(5) Cross the road, continue straight on along the Roman Road, which descends after a wrought-iron cross and joins the D1 after a right-hand bend. Turn sharply left and keep left at the next junction to quickly reach the corresponding site.

(6) Turn right just after the shed onto a downhill path and turn sharply left after 180m to cross the Petite Vielle stream.
Take the path opposite the bridge, pass a secluded cottage and keep right at the fork whilst maintaining the same direction. You will reach a junction at a stone cross.

(7) Head straight on and climb towards the vineyards until you reach a five-way junction. Turn left and continue along the hillside until you find an entrance to the vineyards on the right.

(8) Do not take the wooded path straight ahead, but turn right and then immediately left to walk along the bottom of the vineyard on a path that quickly climbs to the right to reach a first landing.

Turn left, then very quickly right, up to the top of the rows, and take the path on the left. Stay on this path, without ever heading back down towards the vineyards, to reach the village of Cromey and catch sight, slightly below, of the car park where you started (S/E).

I’m going to combine it with a second route, offering two levels of difficulty: 11.5 km and 8 km.

Just a quick correction to my comment from yesterday... I realised I made a mistake during the hike... which meant we ended up taking a road!
So I suggest changing the review to:
Instead of: "Lovely paths, but... also a lot of tarmac, unfortunately... what a shame!"
Change it to: "Lovely paths, a bit of tarmac, but no big deal!"
Thanks

A lovely walk, with beautiful scenery and unobstructed views – for example, of Mont Rome and many other sights – as well as sections through the woods...
Lovely paths, but... also a lot of tarmac, unfortunately... a shame!
Best avoided in hot, sunny weather.

A lovely, varied walk with a few gentle climbs and descents, followed by a flat stretch along the Roman road. Views of the surrounding villages and Mont Rome. Splendid! Thank you for this new walk, which we really enjoyed.
