Description of the walk

The starting point is in the hamlet of Peignard on Rue de la Boulaie, where there are parking facilities.

(S/E) Head south-west and then join the D36, which you follow carefully to the left. This takes you to the village of Le Plessix.

(1) Carry on straight ahead. Further on, you’ll see Impasse du Champ Charles on your left, and about 200 m further on, turn left onto Chemin des Champs Charles. This bypasses the D36 before rejoining it after 150 m.

(2) Cross it by turning left then right (take care), and head straight on along Rue du Commandant Armand Hamon. Continue to the next roundabout.

(3) Take the second exit going round the roundabout. Now follow Rue de la Colignère. Turn left at the end of the street, then left again at the junction to reach the Morandais roundabout.

(4) Take the first road on the right, then turn left immediately onto Rue George Sand (pedestrian crossing). A little further on, look out for the junction with Impasse Jacqueline Auriol.

(5) Just before this junction, look out for a lane on the right that slopes down to connect the streets. Cross Rue Marie Curie, Rue Olympe de Gouges and Rue Hélène Boucher in turn to come out onto the Route de Brest (D712).

(6) Cross the road (at the pedestrian crossing) and go round the rainwater retention basin on the right. Head towards the small lake, walk along its right-hand side and, at the far end, turn right heading south-south-west. At the junction, turn left to reach the Salle Verte via a small street.

(7) The small street turns left; turn left again at the junction to join the D36. Cross it carefully and continue straight on along the Chemin des Bretons. You will then reach a crossroads at a place called La Cruyère.

(8) Take the path that leads straight ahead. At the Fork in the road a little further on, turn right and then cross Les Herbotins. Continue straight ahead, first turn right then left, carry on due north, then, after a right-hand bend, you’ll reach the crossroads on the outskirts of Île Moreau.

(9) Ignore the path branching off to the right; take the track just after it, which leads to the hamlet of Moulin de la Roche. Go round the hamlet on the left, follow the PR® sign and walk alongside the Gouët. Pass under the D712 viaduct and reach the D24 road. Turn left onto it and, after about a hundred metres, you’ll find a path leading uphill to the right.

(10) Follow this path until you reach the road. Turn right onto it and follow it for about a hundred metres. Just before a house, a path marked with a ‘Dead End’ sign branches off to the right.

(11) Continue along this track without leaving it for nearly 800 m until you reach a junction leading to the industrial ruins

(12) Turn left, pass under a high-voltage power line and reach the mine site.

(13) Retrace your steps back to the previous junction.

(12) Continue to the left. At the next junction, take the left-hand branch of the PR® and you’ll reach the fenced-off entrance to a former mine shaft.

(14) Go back a little way and follow the path that descends to the left. A little further down, you’ll reach La Mottais.

(15) As you approach the houses, look out for the path leading uphill to the left. Follow it to reach Peignard via Rue de Peignard. Then turn left to rejoin Rue de la Boulaie (S/E).

Notes

This route was walked after a spell of rain and a day’s hunting. That is why it includes a lot of roads at the start, as it was impossible to follow the marked footpaths, which were partly flooded or blocked by hunters.
