Departure from Mittelwihr Town Hall, easy to find on the Alsace Wine Route (D1b). Quickly accessible from local hotels. Easy parking nearby.
(S/E) Start the walk on the street to the left of the town hall, Rue du Buhl. After 30 metres, turn slightly onto Rue des Merles and head west;the Vosges mountains are visible on the horizon. After about 300 metres, you will reach the junction with the small Rue du Gewurtz.
(1) Go up this small street on the left until you reach Place and Rue du Bouxhof. Information panels illustrate local history: the battles of 1944 and earlier times.
(2) Go down Rue de Bouxhof on the left and, after 200 metres, you will come to a crossroads.
(3) Turn right onto Rue des Griottes, which leads into the vineyard. At the first three-way junction, continue slightly to the left on the main path. Continue straight ahead for 1 km, then continue on the tarmac path that turns right and climbs the slope towards the north-west: the American memorial, the flag and the trees are good landmarks to follow.
(4) Enter the car park on the left. After enjoying the view of Colmar, the Alsace plain and the Black Forest on the horizon, walk up to the military cemetery. Respecting the solemnity of the place, walk up to the tricolour flag at the top of the necropolis. Follow the low wall around the top of the hill.
(5) Look for the footpath on the right, behind the low wall. This path leads through the bushes and joins the gravel farm track below the necropolis. Continue along this path, turning left, heading straight towards the Vosges mountains in the distance. After 600 metres, you will come to a fork in the path.
(6) Continue to the right on the tarmac road, which slopes down slightly. Continue straight ahead for 1 km, passing the Buchshof (or Bouxhof) farm. At the end of this local road, you will come to a T-junction.
(7) Turn right onto the tarmac road and, after 250 m, turn left at the crossroads. Follow the tarmac road with the hilltop village of Zellenberg straight ahead.
(8) Cross a road and, at the stream, continue slightly to the right and follow the stream to the junction with the district road. Cross carefully and continue straight ahead to the city stadium opposite the cemetery.
(9) Immediately afterwards, turn right onto Chemin des Amandiers. Continue along this path until you reach the telephone antenna, then go straight on along the stone path on the ridge. Follow the path along the edge of the slope, lined with almond trees.
(10) At the crossroads, turn right to descend towards the village of Mittelwihr. Cross the Sambach and you will come out on the Wine Route.
(11) Turn left and follow the departmental road to return to the starting point at the town hall in Mittelwihr (S/E).
