Loop starting from Silenen, above Amsteg, canton of Uri.

This loop can be completed in a day, but it is more comfortable to spend the night in the welcoming Windgällenhütte. A beautiful balcony trail once you have crossed the very steep Bockistock corridor. The steep climb is then rewarded. Swimming is possible in the charming little Golzerensee lake.

Description of the walk

Park in the free car park at the start of the small cabin. Toilets nearby. Take the cable car to the top. There are several trips a day. Price: 11 francs for a single adult ticket.

(S) When you arrive at the cabin, take the wide path for 50 metres.

(1) Take the marked trail that branches off to the left and climbs steeply towards the Windgällenhütte. Be careful, the slope is steep and the climb is difficult in hot weather.

(2) When you reach the end of the corridor, start the balcony trail.

(3) Pass between the sheepfolds (water). The trail climbs gently and steadily to the SAC refuge (food and accommodation available if booked in advance).

(4) Take the signposted path that passes under the refuge. Do not confuse it with the path that descends more directly. Follow the path towards the glacier and the Hüfihütte, always heading east.

(5) Change direction and follow the south-west-facing trail.

(6) At the viewpoint, continue south-west and arrive at the Bergehotel (terrace, food available).

(7) The trail heads northeast before turning southwest. It becomes easy and descends to the river.

(8) Cross the river on a bridge. Then follow a wide path down the valley.

(9) Leave this wide path and take a small shaded trail that branches off to the right. Cross a bridge and climb up to cross the rock barrier. The trail is very well maintained with steps, metal stairs and safety cables. It climbs 300 m to reach the pretty Golzerensee lake (swimming possible).

(10) Continue to the left, along the southern and then western edge of the lake, and at the intersection, head east.

(11) The trail passes in front of some inns, then turns into a wide path that descends. Turn left 100 m after the inns to descend (otherwise stay on the upper path to reach the cabin (recommended if your knees are tired).

(12) Leave the wide path and take the trail that branches off to the right for a more direct descent, steeply downhill through the forest. At the bottom, return to the car park (E).
