Description of the walk

(S) From the Hôtel Central, follow the route from the previous day, cross the bridge over the Dordogne and head up Rue de Paris to the old Halle aux Blés on Place du 19 Octobre. Turn left onto Place de l’Égalité then Rue des Orgues to reach the D979. Take this road to the left until you reach the junction with the Chemin du Sacristain.

(1) Turn right at the top of the hill, crossing the D127. Continue uphill through the woodland; you will soon reach a Y-junction.

(2) Turn right at a 180° angle onto a beautiful path cutting across the landscape. Follow it, passing beneath the climbing site and the Orgues, then turn left after the cliff. You will reach a junction at the edge of the woods.

(3) Turn left onto the Chemin des Orgues; at the next junction, turn left to reach the Orgues de Bort viewpoint.

(4) Leave the site heading due west along the tarmac road, passing the telecommunications mast. Cross the car park and join the D127. Follow it to the right to the hamlet of Puy de Bort, the highest point of the walk.

(5) Take the path on the left, descend gently and cross an astonishing area of rocky chaos. Look for marker no. 2 St-Julien-près-Bort 42 km, the route marker at the boundary between municipalities. Continue to the hamlet of Saunat and the crossroads marked by a cross.

(6) Turn left and head for the hamlet of Lagrange. At the crossroads marked by a cross just before the houses, keep left and cross the hamlet. Continue along some very scenic farm tracks and rejoin the tarmac road in the hamlet of Pailler, where there is a picnic table next to a drinking trough.

(7) Continue due north, pass under two high-voltage power lines and reach the Cronzat road. Cross it and continue to the junction with the D127 at the cemetery.

(8) Here you have two options:
- turn left, cross Saint-Julien-près-Bort and continue along the D127E1 to reach the stunning site of Saint-Nazaire,
- follow the D127 to the left for a few metres (this is the route shown on the map), cross it and head right behind the village hall. At the end of the tarmac, follow a good path to the left. Cross the Laborde stream and head uphill to cut across the D127 and pass through the hamlet of Laborde.

(9) Continue across the meadows then enter the forest. Turn sharply left and begin the descent towards the Diège. Pass through the forest to find marker no. 3 Margerides 57 km. Head back up to reach the D20 at the place known as Le Cantonnier. Continue through the undergrowth to emerge onto the D20 at a road junction.

(10) Turn left downhill, ignoring the Route du Moulin on the right (where there is an old Michelin marker), pass an old, isolated inn by the roadside and reach the Rotabourg bridge.

(11) Cross the Diège and begin a new climb towards the plateau. You will then come to a path junction, marked by a post.

(12) Take the path to the right through the woods; further up, rejoin the Route des Moulins and follow it to the right. Shortly afterwards, ignore the first road on the right towards Les Chaumettes, then turn left onto the Route de Pradou, leaving the hamlet of Rotabourg on your right. Reach the Puy Sivadou picnic area (accommodation available).

(13) Stay on the road on the right to climb up to the place known as Le Bois du Peyroux, then descend to the church at Roche-le-Peyroux. You will then reach the picnic area above the church and opposite the cemetery, which has a water point and dry toilets, where you can set up camp (E) for the day’s stage.
