Description of the walk

Car park in front of the former town hall, Place des Combattants, in Maissin.

(S/E) With the church on your left, go down the N808 and then turn left onto Rue de la Justice. Pass the cemetery and leave the town. The road turns into a gravel path and descends towards the Lesse. Cross it via the Pont de la Justice and walk to the place called La Mambor.

(1) Turn left onto the path. Further on, pass the Roche aux Nutons. You will come to a road and the place called Moulin de Wezelvau.

(2) Turn left and cross the Ruisseau de la Prairie stream. Ignore the road on your right and, at the fork, continue to the right.

(3) Go through the gate and remember to close it behind you. Walk until you reach the building on your left.

(4) Turn right and enter the forest. Walk to thefirst forest path on your right. Turn right and walk along the main path for just under 1 km until you reach a large gate.

(5) Go through the gate and remember to close it behind you. Walk along the road until you reach the T-junction and the information board. Turn left. Go through another large gate and remember to close it behind you. Walk up the forest track, which turns left. You will soon see the path on your right.

(6) Turn right and walk for about 250 metres until you reach the path on your right.

(7) Turn right, go downhill and you will see the Witches' Sabbath on your right. Then take the path slanting off to your left, level with the sculptures, and go down to the road. Cross diagonally to the right and continue along the forest path opposite. Go up the forest path, which turns left, until you reach the slightly sunken forest path on your right.

(8) Walk up the forest path for 500 metres, ignoring the intersections, and exit the woods. Walk another 500 metres to the crossroads, where you will see the Christmas tree plantation.

(9) Turn left and walk along the farm road to the chapel.

(10) Take the road to the right of the chapel when facing its entrance. Walk along the farm track for about 1 km. Go through the gate, enter the forest and look for the path on your right.

(11) Turn right and walk down to the crossroads. Continue straight ahead and stay on the main path until you reach the building in the meadow.

(4) Take the same path back in the opposite direction.

(3) Go through the gate and continue along the road to a place called Moulin de Welzevau.

(2) Turn right, pass the Roche aux Nutons again and you will arrive at a place called La Mambor.

(1) Turn right, cross the Pont de la Justice bridge again and go up the gravel path. Enter the village. The path becomes a tarmac road. Continue for another 500 metres along the road to reach your car park (S/E).

Worth a visit

Pont de la Justice: this bridge spans the Lesse river on the old road connecting Maissin to Villance. It dates from the 19th century. Built of schist rubble, it has two arches joined by a beak upstream and downstream. The parapet is finished with schist stones placed on edge and cut into a half-moon shape. The two entrances have been widened. It allowed the Lesse to be crossed by an important road connecting Saint-Hubert to France.

Roche des Nutons: the nutons lived in caves and rock crevices. Sometimes cobblers, sometimes blacksmiths or tinsmiths, their exceptional physical strength made them feared beings. To win their favour and reward their services, the country folk made gifts in kind (eggs, bread, butter, etc.), which they left at the entrance to their dwellings.

Sculptures from the "Fabriek de l'Aubépine", after the (7), depicting the witches' sabbath

Christmas tree cultivation.

Chapel of Transinne: built between 1858 and 1908.

Superb hike on Friday, 2 December 2025. The snow was there, what more could you ask for?
Varied landscapes, not too much tarmac; the only (very minor) criticism is that there is too long a section of the route that is a return trip; that said, given the layout, I don't think it was possible to do it any other way. I only came across five or six people, and I will have wonderful memories of this day. Thank you.
