Circular route between Maissin and Redu

Car park very close to Maissin church on the N 899.

(S/E) With your back to the church, cross the N899 and take the small road to the right of the mini-market (Rue du Chatelain, but there is no street sign). At the end, turn right. Continue along the road.

(1) At the first fork, keep left and follow the road until you enter the forest.

(2) At the next fork, keep right and at the junction, continue to the right.
Ignore the paths branching off to your right and stay on the forest track until you reach the Y-junction.

(3) Turn left and at the next junction, continue straight ahead. Head down the main path until you reach a road.

(4) Turn right. Further down, ignore the signposting leading off to your right and continue straight on. Cross the bridge over the Lesse and turn right. Follow the^GR®14for about 200 metres.

(5) At the junction, follow the fairly steep road on your left, which turns into a forest track further up. At the fork, keep left.

(6) Cross a cleared area to the crossroads.

(7) Turn right until you reach the green gate.

(8) Go through the gate and close it properly behind you. Continue to the road.

(9) Turn right and keep to the right at the next fork. Follow the path to another green gate.

(10) Go through the gate and make sure you close it behind you. Follow the path, which becomes a track, down to the Lesse. Ignore the signposting and cross the bridge. Walk past the building and continue along the track opposite. On the forest track, keep to your left.

(11) Take the grassy path leading uphill to your right. After a sharp bend in the path, you will come to a forest track.

(12) Head left and, at the T-junction, turn right.

Ignore the paths branching off to your left and return to a junction you passed on the way out.

(3) Ignore the markings and continue along the path to the left. Immediately take the path on the left and follow it all the way down.

(13) At the bend, take the path leading off to the right, then immediately take the first path on the right. Follow the Lesse river to the road. Turn left, cross the bridge, cross the road carefully and continue along the road opposite towards Villance.

(14) About 350 metres further on, take the path descending to your right towards the Marie-Thérèse bridge. Cross the bridge and head back up to the N899. Cross the road carefully and continue straight ahead along Rue de Brest.

(1) Continue straight ahead and return to the church via the path you took on the way there (S/E).

At (7), continue straight ahead to reach the centre of Redu.

Redu: village of the Book

Marie-Thérèse Bridge: dating from the 18th century, a remarkable schist structure comprising four uneven arches, the parapet of which is topped with half-moon-shaped cut stones. Tradition has it that Empress Maria Theresa had the bridge built following an accident she suffered whilst crossing the river on horseback. The reality is quite different: this four-arched bridge was built over the Lesse to modernise the old Bouillon–Liège road.
