Around Mont Secret

Circling Mont Secret with an off-centre start at the car park near L’Aufrairie, this more challenging route climbs towards Mont de Cerisy along the section belonging to the commune of Montsecret. Between two hills, will Mont Secret perhaps reveal itself?

Description of the walk

Starting point: L’Aufrairie in Montsecret (bus stop D265)

(S/E) Head towards Frênes via the D815, ignore a road on the left and arrive at a dirt track on the left.

(1) Take this track and, at the crossroads, turn left towards the hamlet of Poulhaye.

(2) Turn left to follow the tarmac road to Le Hamel Vigor. Leave the hamlet on your right and continue to a junction.

(3) Take the path on the left towards Mont de Cerisy. You are now on the route taken by the cloutiers coming from Landisacq. These craftsmen used this path to transport their wares to be sold in Condé-sur-Noireau and from there to Caen. Continue along this path until you reach the D265 road.

(4) Cross it carefully andyou will reach the Paris-Granville railway bridge, built by hand around 1866–1867.

(5) In the field, on the other side of the bridge, you can see a gable wall with a granite chimney. This is all that remains of the former manor house of the de La Rivière family, a noble family who owned this small estate in the 15th and 16th centuries. The boundary between Montsecret and Cerisy-Belle-Étoile ran through the middle of their hall and fireplace, from north to south. Continue due north until you reach a fork in the road.

(6) Take the sharp right-hand bend, climb towards Mont de Cerisy and, before turning onto the first path on the right, you can see on the left a small hill rising to 185 m: Mont Secret?

(7) Turn north-west and arrive at a crossroads.

(8) Following mountain bike signpost no. 19, head to the viewpoint which, although situated on Mont de Cerisy, lies within the municipality of Montsecret: a quarter of the hill actually belongs to it.

(9) Retrace your steps.

(8) Take the first path on the right. Head towards the site known as Vieux Saint-Pierre via theGR®22B, then continue along the path on the left to reach the bridge known as La Cécile, which crosses over the railway line.

(10) Continue on to L’Aufrairie (S/E).

Worth a visit

Mont de Cerisy had belonged to the monks of Belle-Étoile Abbey since the early 13th century. Seized during the Revolution, it was sold for the benefit of the State to successive buyers. In 1867, it was acquired by Lord Burkinyoung, a wealthy London lawyer who had a Tudor-style castle built there. Isidore Corbière, who became the owner in 1885, landscaped the grounds, planting thousands of rhododendrons.

A very pretty hike, as bucolic as you could wish for. Our progress was only slowed down by picking blackberries 😉.
We pushed on to the summit, not all the way to the castle but at least to admire the lake.

A pleasant and easy walk.
However, the route doesn’t go past the castle or through the park.
That’s a shame. There’s even a bar and toilets.
You just need to go straight on at the last left-hand bend before point 7.
At the castle, you can climb the tower, which offers a superb 360-degree view of the Normandy countryside.
The castle esplanade is perfect for a picnic.
On leaving the castle, turn right to rejoin the route towards the viewpoint.
