Park in the car park behind the church in Aspach-Le-Bas.
(S/E) From the car park, walk past the church and turn right onto Rue de la Station. At the cross, turn left, then right twice onto Sentier du Moulin and Rue des Pierres. Follow the path into the forest, cross a stream and then the tourist railway line.
(1) Just after the tracks, turn left then right, following the blue triangle markings. After a short climb, you will see the lake's retaining wall.
(2) Walk along the southern shore of the lake for 1 km. On the other side, you will see the village of Michelbach and, in the distance, the Vosges mountains and their highest peak, the Grand Ballon (topped by a dome). After a meadow, turn right to get closer to the lake.
(3) Take the secondary dam that closes off the tail end of the lake. Fed by a small stream, it has a constant low water level.
(4) After this dyke, turn right to walk along the northern shore of the lake. At the entrance to the forest, follow the path on the right which leads to an observatory.
(5) Take the time to watch the birds (numerous during the migratory period), then walk back into the forest for a few metres until you reach a path on the right.
(6) When you reach the dyke, follow it until it turns to the right. Take the descent on the left, cross a small wooden bridge and enter the forest. Cross the railway line again and continue straight on to the village of Aspach-Le-Bas, until you reach the church car park (S/E).
We did this route in very hot and dry weather.
