Around Saint-Symphorien in Cherré-Au

Cherré-Au is a new commune formed in 2019 by merging the communes of Cherré and Cherreau, located east of La Ferté-Bernard. The village of Cherreau has always been closely linked to the neighbouring town of La Ferté-Bernard. Indeed, in the Middle Ages, the lords of La Ferté took over the Abbey of La Pelice at the end ofthe 12th century. Then, in the14th century, the Domaine de la Plaisse was incorporated into that of La Ferté. More recently, as the town of La Ferté-Bernard expanded inthe 19th century, it encroached upon Cherreau, annexing the hamlets of Gué-Faux and La Fosse Fondue in 1889, which bordered the road to Paris.

Description of the walk

Start at the church square.

(S/E) Leave the church square heading towards La Ferté-Bernard (D153), pass the junction with the roundabout and take the first path on the right to pass the wash house. Pass between the houses to come out onto the tarmac road (C201), which you should follow to the left.

(1) At the junction, take the road going uphill to the right. Pass La Grande Sorie on your right and, shortly afterwards, take the path on the left leading down into the woods, which comes out onto the C201.

(2) Follow this road uphill to the left for 80 metres, then take the path on the right after the bend. Pass Le Cormier on your left and turn left at La Chevaudière.

(3) At the end of the street, take the dirt track and continue to the crossroads. Take the small tarmac road on the right, then follow the first dirt track down to the left. Follow the fence to come out onto the D153.

(4) Turn right onto it, then immediately left onto Chemin du Clos Maroc.

(5) At the transformer, take the GR® (red and white markings) to the left and continue to the junction.

(6) Take the path down to the left (leaving the GR®). Continue to the right until you reach the C401 road.

(7) Take the road on the left to reach the village (S/E).
