The woods of Beauvais

A lovely walk along sunken paths, through woodland and across the gentle hills of the Perche. Panoramic views of the Huisne and Maroisse valleys.

Description of the walk

Park in front of the church in Avezé.

(S/E) With your back to the church, head up Rue du Prieuré to the right and turn left into Rue de la Poste, which continues as a grassy track and joins the RD323.

(1) Cross the road carefully and take the tarmac path that climbs towards the woods of Beauvais.

(2) When you reach a junction, turn right onto the small dirt track leading to Les Seilleries, which continues as a tarmac road.

(3) Continue along the tarmac road to the left and walk along the edge of the woods until you reach the Ceton road.

(4) Turn left onto this road towards Ceton, follow it for about 300 m and turn left onto the path at the edge of the woods (not the one leading into them). Follow this path and, before reaching Les Galottières, turn right to rejoin a dirt track.

(5) Turn left to follow this sunken lane lined with beautiful pollarded beech trees, which leads to Les Haies Charmeteau and then passes through La Houssaye. Continue along the tarmac road.

(6) Before a bend, turn left onto a stony path that climbs towards the woods, then turn at the edge of the Tuyau estate. Continue along the edge of the woods on the path, which offers views of the Maroisse valley and then a view of the towers of Beauvais Castle.

(7) At this point, the path climbs steeply (20% gradient), passes behind Beauvais and winds along the edge of the woods. Discover and admire the Huisne valley and Le Theil-sur-Huisne. Cross a wide farm track and continue along the edge of the forest until you reach a junction.

(8) Turn right onto the narrow dirt track which descends and leads to Les Vaux-Gomberts. Follow the tarmac road for about fifty metres.

(9) Turn left off it onto the dirt track that descends and crosses a stream. Follow the path between two cultivated fields to reach Le Mané. Continue along the tarmac road to a crossroads you passed on the way there.

(2) Turn right. Continue straight on to Les Sablons.

(1) Cross the road again with the same care and continue to the starting point in front of the church (S/E).

This route through the Bois de Beauvais, starting from Avezé, is marked with A1 signs by a local association. This route of the Bois de Beauvais can also be started from Ceton; it is marked with yellow signs. The poorly maintained path leading to Le Mané, which forced you to walk across the fields, is maintained by volunteers from Avezé. It is difficult to maintain. I will pass on your comments to them.

A lovely walk offering plenty of beautiful views (marked A1, incidentally). The only downside is a narrow, very poorly maintained path towards the end of the route; you’ll need to take the field above it. Note: there is an irrelevant sign for “Bois de Beauvais” before Les Galottières (this is a different route). There is a small car park below the church in Avézé with toilets. Highly recommended walk.

A lovely, shaded walk, well signposted; the only downside is a short stretch towards the end where the narrow path is overgrown with brambles and nettles.

A pleasant walk with lovely views all along the way and very clear signposting; it’s a 1A-rated walk – a shame that this rating isn’t mentioned on the information sheet. :

Hello!
I might be interested in this route as I live quite close by!

Is the Bois de Beauvais open to the public or private?
Thanks in advance!

Have a good day.
