Around Monchaux-sur-Écaillon

Starting from Monceaux-sur-Écaillon, set off on a rural route that gently climbs through meadows and hedgerows.

The first steps lead to Quérénaing, where the charm of red bricks blends with the tranquillity of the allotment gardens. Then, heading towards Maing, the Arenberg Canal and its green banks invite you to stop and contemplate.

The final stage towards Thaint reveals bucolic views of the Écaillon valley, between rapeseed fields and secret groves. Bring a water bottle to make the most of this Valenciennes getaway.

Description of the walk

Park behind the church on Rue des Coquelicots.

(S/E)Leaving the car park with your back to the church, turn right onto Rue d'en Haut and follow it to the junction with Sentier de Lobeau. Turn left, ignore the fork on the right, then continue to the T-junction with Chemin de Verchain towards Valenciennes. Turn left, ignore the path on your left and continue to the Chemin de Sommaing crossroads.

(1) Make a sharp right turn, pass under a high-voltage power line and continue south-east. At the first junction, turn left onto Chemin du Canton des Escauperches. At the next junction, continue straight on Rue de Verchain.

(2) After 150 metres, turn left onto Sentier du Courtil au Trèfle. Ignore the immediate left turn and continue onto Rue des Ancolies, which you follow to the right. At the crossroads, turn left onto Rue Neuve, ignore the first left turn, then turn right to arrive at Place Jules Bacq (church).

(3) Turn left, then turn right at the end of the street. At the T-junction, follow Rue Jean Monnet (D958) to the left and pass in front of the town hall. At the next junction, turn left onto Rue de Maing. After 100 metres, turn right onto Rue Saint-Quentin, follow it straight ahead, pass the cemetery and, at the end of the asphalt, continue on Chemin du Pont de Caumont.

(4) At the intersection, turn left onto Chemin du Trou au Renard and pass under several high-voltage power lines. At the T-junction, make a small detour to the right, then to the left to head west-northwest. You will find the tarmac road at the edge of the last houses.

(5) At the next T-junction, take Rue Vincent Van Gogh on the right, then turn left onto Rue Édouard Manet. Ignore the side streets on the left until you reach the next T-junction. Follow Rue Pierre Vanderbecq on the left, then take the first right (Rue Alphonse Dangréaux). Pass a junction on the right, then one on the left.

(6) At the roundabout, turn left onto Rue Jean Jaurès, ignoring the lanes on the right. Just after a car park on the right, turn right onto Rue Léon Rucart and pass in front of the church.

(7) Take the first left onto Résidence des Frères Rucart, then join the D259 and follow it to the roundabout. At the roundabout, take the first exit on the left, cross the D40 and follow Rue Roger Salengro along the cemetery.

(8) Immediately take the next left, still on Rue Roger Salengro. Carefully cross the D40 and continue straight on Chemin d'en Bas. Ignore the path on the left, head south under the high-voltage power lines, then continue on the road until you reach Rue de l'Église. Turn left to return to the starting point. (S/E)
