Around Marnay, its lake and woods

Remains of Gallo-Roman buildings have been found in Marnay. However, the commune was not mentioned until 1210. A gate and some remains of the old surrounding walls are still visible. A few elements of the feudal castle also remain, including the drawbridge and two turrets. The old town also has many houses dating from the 15th and 16th centuries. The current town hall dates from the Renaissance.
The castle overlooking the Ognon valley was rebuilt in the 16th century but has been extensively remodelled since then.
Finally, the Gothic church dates from the 14th and 17th centuries. The 20-hectare lake is home to many animal and plant species.

Description of the walk

Marnay is located south of the Ognon Valley, halfway between Gray and Besançon. The village is crossed by the Way of St. James. To get to Marnay, park in the car park by the cemetery and sports facilities on Rue Jean-Baptiste Brussey.

(S/E) From the car park, join Rue Jean-Baptiste Brusset and turn right (tennis courts on your right) to take the rural path Champs Drouillots. Follow this path along the lake (on your left) until you pass under the D67.

(1) After passing under the bridge, continue on the path that runs alongside the D67 until you reach the roundabout.

(2) Go around the roundabout using the pedestrian crossing. Cross the Route de Chenevrey and go around the building selling building materials on the right to reach Rue Fernand Roy. In this street, at the next crossroads, take Rue Paul Robinet on the right. Follow it to reach Chemin rural de la Chaux at the T-junction.

(3) Turn left at the junction with a path (elevation 219) and stay on this road until you reach the antenna after the motocross track.
After the antenna, keep left to follow the PR® and reach a crossroads.

(4) Turn right heading north until you reach the junction with the D67. Cross the road (take care) and take the path opposite on the right. Continue along this path, keeping to the right, which runs alongside the D67. Immediately after, you will see the start of a path on the left (elevation 245).

(5) Turn left and follow the PR® signs. Walk along the Bois des Plantes and then through the woods, staying on the path until you reach the crossroads at the edge of the forest, which will take you to the D29.

(6) Reach the point (altitude 241) on the D29, cross the road (take care) and follow the road on the right along the grass verge for about 300 m. At the crossroads, turn left and continue to follow the PR® to cross the hamlet of Les Brosses. At the end of the hamlet, after about 100 metres and after a left-hand bend, you will come to a hairpin bend on the right.

(7) Leave the path and continue straight ahead on the PR® towards Bois des Prêtes. Continue on this uphill path until you reach a T-junction, then turn left. After a little over 250 m, at the intersection, turn right towards Bois de Brussey. You will reach a four-way intersection.

(8) Turn left and continue straight ahead until you reach a forest road (elevation 318). Turn 90° to the right to find a right-hand bend which, straight ahead, joins another crossroads (elevation 282). Continue along the small road that opens onto the edge of a meadow, following the fence until you reach the crossroads (elevation 253).

(9) Leave the road and take the path on the right. Follow this path, which turns left as it leaves the forest and crosses the fields between Les Vignottes and Les Douces Terres. After a wide bend to the left, it joins the D15, which descends towards the village of Brussey.

(10) At the junction with the D15, turn right onto the pavement towards Marnay (70). After about 100 metres, take the protected crossing and cross the road to enter Rue du Moulin. Continue to the X-junction with a cycle path.

(11) Turn right onto this cycle path until you reach the D15 or Route de Brussey.

(12) Cross the D15 and follow the path opposite. Continue along this road, pass the Marnay emergency services centre and continue straight ahead to join the footpath that runs alongside Rue Georges Gabiot. At the junction with Rue Georges Gabiot and Rue Pasteur, turn left to return to the pedestrian crossing. Cross Rue Pasteur and join Voie de Verdun.

(13) Just after the stop sign, at the entrance to Voie de Verdun, turn left onto a path leading downhill. Cross the bridge over the Ruisseau de la Fontaine de Douis and immediately turn left onto a path following the stream. Continue until you reach the junction with Rue du Pont Charriot and Rue des Frères Gardet.

(14) Cross the bridge on the left over the Ruisseau de la Fontaine de Douis and, immediately after, follow the path on the right. Further on, keep to the right, cross the stream again and rejoin Rue des Frères Gardet. Turn left and, just before Grande Rue, in the right-hand bend, go straight ahead to take the small lane called Rue de l'Abreuvoir.

(15) This leads to the Douis fountain or wash house. Pass the Fontaine de la Douis fountain and climb the steps on the right to return to Rue Paul Minary. At the crossroads with Rue Paul Minary, turn right and join Grande Rue. Follow it to the right towards the centre of the village. Ignore Rue Gambetta on your right as you climb and watch out for the Passage François Gauthier on your left. Follow it to join Rue Conscience.

(16) Take this street a few metres to the left and climb the steps on the right. You will reach Place Jean de Joinville.
Go back down Rue de la Place de Jean de Joinville and head towards Saint-Symphorien Church. Pass in front of the church and go slightly up the street to see Marnay Town Hall. Retrace your steps to the entrance of Rue de l'Église.

(17) Pass between the church and the town hall, then continue along Rue Pourny and, at the end of this street, turn left onto Rue Jean-Baptiste Brusset and return to the car park (S/E).
