Description of the walk

Placey - Chemin des Combes - Parking available on the left at the edge of a thuja hedge.

(S/E) Continue along the path to the south-west. Reach the farm building.

(1) Turn right onto a wide path. Reach the D415 road and follow it to the left for about 100 metres. Then take the path on the right, through the fields. Reach a crossroads at elevation 241 (see map).

(2) Continue straight ahead, ignoring a path on the left, and walk alongside three ponds on the left-hand side. Cross the Breuil stream via a pretty stone bridge and arrive at the village of Franey via the Placey path (pretty fountain/wash house on the left)

(3) Turn left and, immediately at the church, take the tarmac lane uphill on the right. At the corner of the cemetery, follow Rue de Vauchon on the right. Cross a small wood, leave a hunting hut on your right and continue straight ahead.

(4) Leave the wide path turning left and continue straight ahead. Turn right with the path.

(5) At the fork, go right and walk downhill along a fence to quickly reach the Fontaine de Vauchon (be mindful of the crops on the side). Retrace your steps.

(5) Head south-west (to the right when returning from the fountain). At the T-junction, follow a path to the left for about 150 metres.

(6) Turn right at an acute angle and walk southwest through a meadow (avoiding walking in a cultivated field). You will come out onto a gravel path.

(7) Take the path on the left. First turn right then left with the path and walk slightly uphill. At the top, turn right.

(8) Follow a tarmac road on the left (Chemin de l'Église) and head eastwards on a slight downhill slope. Cross the village of Lavernay (church on the left). Follow the D415 on the left and cross the Breuil stream.

(9) Take Rue de Prêle on the right, climbing slightly, then turn left onto Chemin de Rougeolle towards the Grandes Fosses housing estate.

(10) At the edge of the forest, take a moderately maintained path heading north to reach a tarmac road (Chemin des Rappes). Take the road on the right. At the edge of the woods, turn left onto a rough track along the Le Dafoy woods.

(11) At the corner of the woods, climb over a fence and cross a meadow for 250 metres. Take the path opposite and head north-east to reach the farm building.

(1) Retrace your steps to return to the car park (S/E).

Hike done following the GPX track. But problem at point 6, couldn't find the path. Return to the T-junction, turn right and walk along the forest. You will find the road a little further on.
Beautiful little villages with their fountains and wash houses.

Departure: in Placey, it is best to go down to the bottom of the village – follow the church and then Multi-activities. This will take you to a nice car park with picnic tables and a beautiful fountain. From there, go back up to the starting point or go via the cemetery.
In Franey, go up just before the church
At point 10, enter the woods as planned, then it is much easier to follow the well-marked path (dotted line on the map) heading east. It winds its way back to the road at an altitude of 266 metres.
point 11: it can be tricky to cross this pasture when there are Comtois horses inside. In this case, take a path on the left twice. When you reach the conifers, go down the slope towards the north-west - approximately 360°. You will come out onto the road, opposite a white hut. No worries here, no ditch to cross. Turn right to rejoin the route. In autumn, the brambles on this path must have been cut back by hunters; it may not be passable when they have grown back.
The churches: of no particular interest and all closed!

it's not easy to find the way to two places just with the map and the description:
- at point 6 (several meadows could be the right one...), perhaps they all lead to the same path... but we were very unsure
- at point 10 (no path, the "path" we followed did not go in the right direction.
With the app on our phone, we easily corrected our mistake and found the right direction.

otherwise, it's very good! Thank you, Visorando

We missed the turn-off at point 10.
Lack of reliable landmarks, no visual reference points.
We veered to the right and arrived at a place called LE CHÂTELARD (near Placey to the south-east), which has an archaeological site with information panels.
It might be worth changing the route after point 10.
The walk through the forest is magnificent all the way to LE CHÂTELARD.

Otherwise, it is a magnificent region, with beautiful views in the distance and pretty, traditional villages.
Beautiful meadows and forests.
