Start at the end of Chemin du Gard, on the heights of Gruyères.
(S/E) Head north-west and follow the edge of the forest.
(1) Take the path on the right, passing bythe oratory of Saint Arnould, a saint murdered by bandits at this spot between 1025 and 1033. Continue straight on until you reach a more clearly marked path.
(2) Turn right onto this path, which will lead you out of the forest. As you leave the forest, on the right, there is a view overlooking Gruyères Castle. You will come out onto a tarmac road.
(3) Turn left. Walk past the farm and continue to the edge of a small wood on the left.
(4) Take the path on the left leading into the Ecogne valley. Follow this farm track between hedgerows and pastures. You will reach a tarmac road.
(5) Continue straight on. Further on, the tin shed in the pasture on the right marksthe former hamlet of Basse Ecogne. An ancient Merovingian cemetery is also located in this pasture.
(6) Take the path leading down to the right. In the background, the path runs alongside the stream for 150 m, where the drinking water catchment resurfaces. Head up into the forest, noting the presence of holes: the ‘minières’. These are old iron mines. The ore was transported to the blast furnaces at Forge Maillard. Join a forest track running across the area.
(7) Go straight across this road and reach a junction.
(8) Take a path lined with rows of trees on the left at a 90° angle and reach the Table des Fées, the summit stone of an ancient dolmen.
(9) Continue along the path for about 800 m.
(10) Turn left onto a wilder track (hunting trail) before rejoining a more clearly marked path.
(11) Take a path on the left.
(1) Continue straight ahead to return to the car park (S/E).
