Around Climbronn Chapel

A lovely circular walk in the Northern Vosges that crosses the old Maginot Line fortifications and passes by the ruins of an old chapel.

⚠️ 02/07/2026: Change to the starting point at the Chemin des Cîmes car park.

Description of the walk

Park atthe Chemin des Cimes car park.

(S/E) Leave the car park and head left, then immediately left again towards Rue du Moulin des 7 Fontaines. Pass a road on your left marked with a Yellow Circle and you’ll reach another junction with the D51.

(1) Take the G531 opposite, following a path marked with a Red Circle. Cross the D51 twice in quick succession, following the Blue Rectangle markings, and continue until you rejoin this road a little further on.

(2) Turn left and follow it to the Col du Pfaffenschlick.

(3) Carry on to the right, passing the Auberge du Pfaffenschlick, and take the first path on the left marked with a Yellow Rectangle.

(4) Take the path on the right towards the Col du Stiefelsberg. After about 500m, cross the old Maginot Line fortifications.
The passage is not secured (no guardrails on the steps).

(5) Follow the path on the right up towards the Col du Stiefelsberg to the spot known as Carrefour des 3 forêts.

(6) After the first pass, head north towards the Col du Pigeonnier.

(7) Cross the Col du Luchsenkopf and turn right, then left.

(8) Join theGR®® 532, then turn left towards Climbach. Follow the forest track.

(9) Leave the track and turn right towards La Chapelle du Climbronn.

(10) You’ll come to the fountain. The water is drinkable and is said to have healing properties.
The vaulted ceiling of the old chapel is full of charm! It’s a very peaceful spot where you could stop for a picnic.
Continue along the path, with a lovely view of Climbach on your right.

(5) Follow the Maginot Line path, then the track leading to the Col du Pfaffenschlick car park (S/E). .

A magnificent walk, culminating in the discovery of the anti-tank ditch and the chapel. It was 34 degrees in the plain and 28 degrees in the forest, where we picked blueberries. A beautiful place with some great views.

A pleasant walk, with no particular difficulties, mainly in the forest. A leisurely 3-hour loop. Two points could be improved: the car park and the directions.
1/ The proposed car park is a private one, reserved for customers of the restaurant. I therefore parked in the free "Chemin des cimes" car park, about 1km below. You can then walk up the road (but there's no footpath, so you have to walk with the passing cars). Another option (which I chose): take the free shuttle bus to the Chemin des cimes then take a path that joins the track just before point 2. It's doable and the path is clearly visible. At the end, however, it's very steep and there's a risk of slipping. On the way back, I preferred to walk along the road back to the Chemin des Cimes car park.
Option 3: park in the car park near the chapel (just before point 7). There aren't many spaces but at least it's not private. Do the loop from there.
2/ The signs: I think it's a shame that the Club Vosgien signs weren't used to follow the hike. Namely: yellow rectangle from the start to point 2, then green triangle from point 2 to point 6, then yellow rectangle again to the end. This makes things much easier when there's a junction.

We weren't familiar with the anti-tank trenches seen at the start of the route and admired the work done at the time. The app really helped us to keep to the route, as we soon headed off in the wrong direction! The passages advertised as dangerous (unsecured steps) can actually be an obstacle for young children or in wet weather (slippery stones). A very pleasant trail between points 3 and 4, amidst the sounds of birdsong. Picnic stop at the Climbach fountain, very few people there that day despite the good weather. An easy return. Thank you for this hike, the view of the village of Climbach from the fountain is magnificent! A beautiful region to discover!

Cool walk in the forest. There was a slight difficulty at the Maginot line crossing, because of a staircase that you shouldn't want to cross with small children. The dog got over it without any problem. Pretty chapel in Climbronn and pleasant drinking spring.
One small problem with the car park, which is indicated as private and is probably very busy at weekends because of the nearby "les cimes" attraction.

This walk is doubly interesting:

the area around the Chapelle du Climbronn. An ideal place to take a snack out of your bag. There is a bakery in Climbach where you can go for refreshments. The spring is well supplied. A good thing for those who are thirsty.
The anti-tank ditches, a curiosity that made us lose our sense of direction. We found our way back

after some hesitation.

Lovely walk in the middle of the Vosges; a few inaccuracies in the description, we never saw the chapel!

A short, easy and pleasant walk.
The only tricky bit were the steps to the anti-tank ditch, which we only climbed on the way back.
Reward on arrival: a nice blueberry tart at the inn 😉
Thank you for this suggestion

A nice route, but it's a shame we didn't make a note of the C.V. signs to make it easier to identify changes of direction. Otherwise, it was a very pleasant walk, on beautiful paths, in almost ideal weather (sunshine, blue skies and +10°). Thanks for the suggestion

We didn't know how to interpret the change of direction at point No. 5; we continued on the GR 532 but straight on when we should have turned back to the left! This is not clearly stated and nothing else indicates the direction of Climbach. It's a pity, because we missed the 2nd half of the hike and never saw the chapel!

A lovely half-day walk. You have to go down into the ditch and climb back up just opposite to continue the walk. Watch out for wet leaves. The signposting is correct, but the IGN 3814ET hiking map is not superfluous.

Lovely walk in the shade when the weather's warm - Easy route with varied scenery - I'd advise you to watch out for the signs around the anti-tank ditch.

The off-piste section is full of brambles and must be avoided.
