Around Ferrassières

A lovely hike on the border between Vaucluse and Drôme. Magnificent landscapes on the Albion plateau and Mont Ventoux. In summer, you can enjoy the lavender in bloom and the cool mountain air.

Description of the walk

To get to Ferrassières, take the D189 from Montbrun-les-Bains or the D63 from Sault and Aurel. Park in the car park between the church and the town hall in Ferrassières, in front of the fountain dedicated to Joan of Arc.

(S/E) With your back to the town hall, turn right (away from the church), ignore a dead end on the left and continue to a crossroads. Keep left until you reach the Col de l'Homme Mort road, turn left onto this road and continue for about 100 metres, then leave the Col road and turn 90° onto a small road on the left.
At the crossroads, in front of a pretty stone gate belonging to the Loren lodge, take a barely visible path on the right and join the road.

(1) Cross it carefully, continue for about 300 m and turn left onto the carriage road (wooden electricity pole). Follow the path that climbs between the lavender fields to the multi-directional crossroads.

(2) Continue climbing up the middle path, ignoring another path that branches off to the left, until you reach an old structure that is an ancient well.

(3) Walk around it, taking care as it is very deep and you can see water at the bottom. Immediately after this old stone well, you will come to a crossroads. Continue climbing to the right via the Combe de Boudriès (ignore the path that climbs to the left). You will reach a T-junction in the bed of a small stream.

(4) Continue opposite in the bed of this stream, which is actually the Combe de Boudriés. Reach the Col de l'Homme Mort via an easy climb.

(5) Take the tarmac road on the left for a few dozen metres, cross it carefully, then turn right and climb up the flower-filled valley. Please note: the path is not very visible at the beginning. Reach the highest point in a small clearing and enjoy the beautiful view of Mont Ventoux.

(6) Continue downhill in a left-hand circular loop, then head south to reach a new T-junction.

(7) Continue straight ahead, heading south until you reach a crossroads.

(8) Turn right and continue until you reach the D63.

(9) Turn right and follow the road until you reach the road on the right that leads to the solar farm.

(10) Continue for 50 metres and take the left-hand path until you reach a crossroads.

(11) Turn left heading south and continue downhill on the discovery trail along the fields, alternating with the edge of the forest, until you reach the Paillette hill.

(12) Descend towards the church, passing in front of a typical house with a loggia (animals on the ground floor, living quarters upstairs). Then return to the car park in the centre of Ferrassièrers (S/E).

Notes

2/11/2023: route modified to avoid passing through private property.

The hike is fairly easy, but there are no markings. Follow the route carefully, as there are many paths leading in all directions. An IGN map or GPS will be very useful. The water is drinkable at the fountain in the centre of Ferrassières.

Worth a visit

(S/E) Ferrassières is the only commune in the Drôme south of the Ventoux-Lure axis. The name comes from the famous lord Montbrun-Ferrassières. The Romanesque-inspired church was built in 1678, and its door dates from 1771. The fountain oratory topped by a statue of Joan of Arc was inaugurated in 1896.

(5) Col de l'Homme Mort: it seems that the name has nothing to do with a dead person but comes from the oume (tree in Provençal) which became orme mort (dead elm) and then Homme Mort (Dead Man).

(10) Photovoltaic park: it occupies the former site of the French nuclear force launch area. Before dismantling, there were two other silos of this type in the commune of Ferrassières.

I completed this route by adding a circular loop and a longer detour to make it a 16 km route with 600 m of elevation gain. It can be done during the lavender blooming season in July, but be sure to bring water as it gets very hot during this period.

Not the most beautiful hike in the region, but still enjoyable with a few sections through the woods, then between lavender fields with views of Mont Ventoux. The difficulty level is manageable, making it a good option for families.

Easy route
Beautiful views of the snow-capped Alps and Mont Ventoux
Best done in winter to see the snow-capped peaks, or in July when the lavender is in bloom
You often ride alongside fields

Thank you for reporting this. Unfortunately, during hunting season, you will need to bypass this area if the gate is closed. At point 7, you can take the path on the left that heads south (if there is no hunting going on, of course), otherwise you will need to retrace your steps and take the route in the opposite direction. It is wise to check for any hunting activity before setting out on your hike.

Please note that between markers 7 and 8 1/2 on the route, you will enter a wooded area marked "chasse gardée" (private hunting ground) with a barrier across the path. When you leave this area, you will see another barrier with a sign saying "propriété privée" (private property). This is a hunting area. The question is: can you still pass through? Well, I did it without encountering anyone...🤗
