Around Brantes

An easy circular walk around Brantes, a village perched in the Toulourenc valley, known as the village of talented artists and craftspeople, following the GR®91 and 9 trails as well as a few forgotten paths. A splendid panorama, first over the ridges of the northern Ventoux, then a beautiful view of the Geine mountain, Plaisians and the Nible.
At the end of the walk, there is the option of a self-guided tour of the village, with its terraced streets and scree slopes where junipers, broom, twisted almond trees and, of course, brambles cling to the rock.

Description of the walk

Head to Brantes via the D40 from Saint-Léger-du-Ventoux or via the D41 coming from Savoillan. Park in a large grassy car park at the top of the village, past the old inn, where there is a table and benches.

(S/E) Take the road on the right and after about 120 m, turn onto a path on the left which climbs, following the red and white markings of the GR®91. Cross the road before reaching the Oratoire Saint-Gens.

(1) Cross the D41 carefully and continue to the right on the GR®91 towards Savoillan. It is a lovely path that climbs towards the Rocher du Charles, with magnificent views of the northern ridges of the Ventoux, which are lightly snow-covered in winter. Reach the white sign for “Brantes via Sénary”.

(2) Leave the GR® here and turn left; there is a large cairn but the path is not very visible. Descend to the track.

(3) Take the track on the left. Follow it until you reach a junction at the small bridge over the Ruisseau de Senaris.

(4) Here (at a place called Sénary) there is no longer any access to the path along the stream (fenced off by the owner). You must head for the bridge.

(5) Cross the bridge and follow the road (with little traffic) up to the Trou du Pertus: here you will find the GR®9 and 91, signposted on a board.

(6) Turn right, climb up to the ridges and begin a short descent on the GR®9 until you reach a junction with a barely visible path on the left.

(7) Leave the GR® trails and take this path on the left, following it through the woods.

(8) Once you reach the ridge line, turn right to descend and, after a few hairpin bends, reach a track running alongside the Ruisseau de Senaris.

(9) Turn left onto this track, passing some pretty waterfalls when there is water, and continue to the hamlet of Fontaube. Here, join the D72.

(10) Follow it to the left for about a hundred metres before leaving it to take a path on the right. Continue straight on this path until you reach a junction with a track.

(11) Take this track to the right and continue the climb, negotiating a series of bends. You’ll reach a crossroads where several paths and tracks meet; veer slightly to the left (do not take the track directly to the left) to rejoin the GR®91 at the highest point.

(12) Turn left onto the GR® and descend to reach the Col de Fontaube.

(13) Continue straight ahead, taking great care on the D41, which also forms part of the GR®. A few hundred metres further on, you will come to a path junction.

(14) Take this path on the right – this is the GR® – and return to the car park in the village of Brantes (S/E).

Worth a visit

(3) Enjoy a lovely view of the Montagne de Geine.
Between (13) and (14) on the D41 there is a lot of motorbike traffic.
Nearby:
- the Chapel of the White Penitents (1705),
- the Church of Sainte-Sidoine (1684),
- the Chapel of Saint John the Baptist (12th century, Romanesque architecture, in the cemetery),
- the old bridge known as the Roman Bridge (13th century), which spans the Toulourenc with a single arch,
- fountains, wash houses, the ruins of the feudal castle, and shops.

A lovely route at the foot of Mont Ventoux.
The route is well signposted and the paths are in good condition.
We completed the whole route without any difficulties;
There was no one else on the route; it was 28 March, with a strong mistral wind.

A lovely, easy hike to follow using the GPX track. Some stunning views. Best avoided in hot weather, though.
It was quite busy when we visited the picturesque village of Brantes.

A lovely walk with varied scenery.
I can confirm the previous reviewer’s comment. Hike completed on 13/04/25: point 5 near the hamlet of Sénaris is no longer accessible; the property has been fenced off for donkeys and horses, and the option to take the path on the left to follow the stream has been blocked off (there are now fenced-off pastures and fields instead).
So at point 4, you must cross the bridge and follow the road (which is quiet) that climbs up the left bank of the stream to the “Trou du Pertus” and point 6.
Apart from that, a very good description. Thank you

Hello, we did this walk today, 4 September 2024. A minor issue at point 4: we didn’t cross the bridge, but a little further down at point 5, we met the landowner, a very kind gentleman, who told us that from now on, the area will be fenced off to provide grazing for around twenty donkeys and horses, and that we would therefore no longer be able to follow the stream at point 5.
From now on, we would have to cross the bridge and head straight to point 6.
But that’s just my opinion.
Best regards

Hello, thank you for your question. We haven’t seen any ‘private property’ signs along the recorded route, particularly between points 4, 5 and 6. You can take the tarmac road between points 4 and 6, after the bridge, and avoid the unmarked path between points 4, 5 and 6.

Hello, apparently the walk isn’t fully signposted – does it cross any private property? Thank you.
